In 1942, his services were needed at the Reich Main Security Office (Reichssicherheitshauptamt) and he was transferred.
He served under Arthur Nebe as a Kriminalrat (Criminal Investigator) and in 1944, he aided in catching the conspirators of the attempt on Hitler's life (the July 20 Plot), leading to his promotion to SS-Sturmbannführer.

This decision, which was made parallel to the preparations for "Barbarossa" (the code word for the military operations involved in the attack on the Soviet Union) around the end of 1940, beginning of 1941, can be reconstructed on the basis of a series of documents.
This must be be based upon a comprehensive deportation of the Jews as well as upon the planning of a settlement action prepared to the smallest detail to take place in a territory which has not yet been decided upon.
Heydrich, who was commissioned with the final evacuation of Jews, had presented the Führer with a proposal 8 to 10 weeks earlier which had not been implemented for the sole reason that the Generalgouvernement was not at that point in a position to accept a single Jew or Pole from the old Reich".

In 1936 Heydrich was promoted to head of the Gestapo (the Secret State Police) as well as the criminal police, while he continued to head the SD.
In 1939 Heydrich was appointed head of the newly created RSHA (Reichssicherheitshauptamt — the ‘Reich Security Main Office’), where all security services within the Nazi regime were now coordinated with the purpose of combating internal enemies.
Within the framework of RSHA, Heydrich was made responsible, by Hermann Göring, for the Nazi regime’s Jewish policies and thus later for the systematic extermination of the European Jews.

15.6 The massacres of the four Einsatzgruppen, the task forces consisting of SS and police personnel subordinate to the Reichssicherheitshauptamt, commenced with the beginning of the war in the East.
These reports were relatively widely circulated: for example 45 copies of situational report No. 40 of 1 August 1941 were distributed; they were sent not only to numerous offices of the SS and police but also to the Leadership staff of the Wehrmacht.
The grounds for the mass executions which were given by the Einsatzgruppen precisely correspond to the justifications offered by Hitler for the extermination of the "Jewish-Bolshevik complex" before the beginning of the war.

He proposed a single new national agency to protect the security of the Fatherland, consolidating the actions of dozens of previously independent police, border, and investigative agencies under a single powerful leader.
Most Americans remember his Office of Fatherland Security, known as the Reichssicherheitshauptamt and Schutzstaffel, simply by its most famous agency’s initials: the SS.
And, perhaps most important, he invited his supporters in industry into the halls of government to help build his new detention camps, his new military, and his new empire which was to herald a thousand years of peace.

On the banks of the lake known as Grosser Wannsee, Reinhard Heydrich used a villa purchased by the Reichssicherheitshauptamt, also known as the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA), to organize a conference on German government business.
The RSHA, an SS organization which incorporated security, intelligence and criminal police work, was run by Heydrich.
In the minds of the Germans, this belief justified all their actions and provided them with the validation they needed to continue doing it until they were victorious.

Turning the dial again, we found a convicted felon ranting about the importance of government having ever-more powers to monitor, investigate, and prosecute American citizens without having to worry about constitutional human rights protections.
Apparently the combining of nationwide German police agencies (following the terrorist attack of February 1933 when the Parliament building was set afire) into one giant Fatherland Security Agency answerable only to the Executive Branch, the Reichssicherheitshauptamt and its SchutzStaffel, was a lesson of history this guy had completely forgotten.

The decision is made after Himmler and the RSHA (`Reichssicherheitshauptamt') chief Kaltenbrunner agree that life in the ghettos is not harsh enough to achieve the "natural demise by means of hard labor," outlined at the Wannsee Conference of January 1942.
The Himmler order results in a massive resettlement-and-murder program, lasting from September 11 to November 3.
