Under the auspices of the appointed supervisor of the CWGC the transposing of the fallen soldiers began, a task in which also German prisoners of war who were in a Canadian compound in the vicinity of the Reichswald were involved.
As early as January 1948 it was made possible to the Director of the Municipal Borough of Kleve to officially give notice of the transport of all deceased allied soldiers who had lost their lives in the district.
The impression that this complex is meant to convey is that of peace and harmony, and this is achieved by this unified layout.

 Reichswald Forest War Cemetery - Veterans Affairs Canada
The cemetery is situated in the centre of the Reichswald Forest and is approximately four kilometres from the border between Germany and the Netherlands.
General Crerar, the Canadian Army commander, said that none of his men would be buried on enemy soil, and his directive was almost completely carried out.
The Canadians buried at Reichswald are entirely airmen, with the exception of one Chaudière regiment soldier, whose remains were found in 1948.

On the night before the battle (6th Feb.45), the RAF bombed Kleve and the local area, but due to the bad weather and the fact that the Luftwaffe came out in force, not all of the targets were hit.
The British troops moved into the Reichswald and soon found themselves out of contact with their Headquarters, radio equipment was almost useless deep in the forest.
It should have been launched at about the same time as the British push through the Reichswald, but due to flooding of the Maas river, the American advance was posponed until the weather conditions improved and the river could be crossed.

The large Reichswald Forest (Forest Reichswald) lies in North Rhine Westphalia, between Cleves (Kleve) and Nijmegen in nearby Netherlands.
Many of the soldiers died in the hard-fought battles of the Rhineland, others in fighting in the Reichswald itself, and yet others during the crossing of the Rhine in March 1945.
Among the soldiers' graves is that of Major General Thomas Rennie, killed by a mortar bomb which exploded on his jeep There are 4,000 airmen in the cemetery, most of whom died in the years of the bombing offensive and some in supporting the advance of the soldiers.

Reichswald Forest War Cemetery was created after the Second World War when burials were brought in from all over western Germany and is the largest Commonwealth cemetery in the country.
