A promising note for the director is the amazing dynamics he gives his characters, not only for the main leads of Ikko (Riona Hazuki) and Mayo (Reiko Takashima), but for the supporting antagonist of Goro Nogi (Jinpachi Nezu).
It's as if he respected them enough to give them a history that is portrayed quite fluidly and even in instances of doubt, you start to have the empathy needed continue your interest in the players that stand on both sides of the morality coin.

Nezu isn't really quite menacing enough to make for a proper villain, but Ono as his wife makes up for it with a scheming and vicious portrayal that effectively plays both sides against each other.
Takashima is a credible enough hitwoman, and Hazuki gives the appearance of being an amateur (as is appropriate) for much of the time.

In contrast, the lack of close-ups and the mostly affectless performances yank us out of the fiction to the point that the many twists, turns, revelations and surprises that keep on piling up risk being lost on the viewer.
Reiko Takashima does a fine job as Miyaki, revealing her infatuation with the dead with suitable subtlety rather than forcing it onto us, but it is easy to feel kinship with the character that feels “totally brain fucked”.
