Reinhold Baer (July 22 1902 – October 22 1979) was a German mathematician, known for his work in algebra.
Reinhold Baer studied mechanical engineering for a year at the Technische Hochschule at Hannover.
Baer wrote up his doctoral dissertation and it was published in Crelle's Journal in 1927.

Baer studied mechanical engineering for a year at the Technische Hochschule at Hannover but realised that this was not the subject for him.
Baer had begun studying infinite abelian groups while at Manchester and he continued his study of this topic at Princeton where he stayed from 1935 until 1937.
Many concepts in this area were introduced by him, in particular the Baer radical of a group and Baer groups (groups in which every cyclic subgroup is subnormal).

Epilogue   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-09)
While we were tracing the origin of the existence problem of the plane of order 10, we asked Dan Hughes, who has worked in this area for a long time and is famous for the Hughes planes which are named after him.
In about 1957, at a Chinese restaurant in Chicago, Reinhold Baer, another mathematician well known for his work in group theory and projective planes, was trying to impress the younger Hughes by remarking that if the plane of order 10 was settled by a computer, he hoped not be alive to see it.
Baer got his wish but I do not think Herb Ryser shared this opinion.

Linear Algebra and Projective Geometry by Reinhold Baer Dover Publications - Escape Strategy.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-09)
Geared toward upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, this text establishes that projective geometry and linear algebra are essentially identical.
Baer assumes you have already mastered standard linear algebra, and are quite familar with fields, groups, rings, isomorphisms, homomorphisms, Galois theory, etc. He also assumes you have a grasp of the concepts and theorems of projective (and some affine) geometry.
There are no explicit exercises or problems, but more than a few non-trivial statements/theorems and non-obvious facts are left for the reader to prove or justify.

 22 Oct History: This Date
His father, Johann Reinhold, was first privy secretary of the last abbot in Saalfeld, Georg von Thüna, later both steward of the former Bededictine monastery (which became secular property in 1534) and alderman in the town council of Saalfeld.
After attending the Saalfeldian town school Erasmus Reinhold was enrolled at the University Wittenberg for the winter term 1530 to study mathematics.
After decades of research Erasmus Reinhold's most important work The Prussian Tables of Celestrial Motion was printed in Tübingen, in which he as a supporter of Copernicanism published calculations of the movement of the planets and the to be expected solar eclipses.

This event will be dedicated to the memory of Reinhold Baer, the centenary of whose birth will occur on July 22, 2002.
These two months will focus on current research and develop topics and methods introduced by and studied by Baer, with particular emphasis on finiteness conditions in group theory and the properties of generalized soluble and nilpotent groups.
The event will serve as a favourable opportunity to discuss the most recent results and foster closer collaboration between Italian and foreign mathematicians interested in these topics.

In the book by Fuchs on abelian group theory which came out in 1973 (a year after I got my Ph.D.), only six sections out of 129 total are devoted to the finite rank torsion free case.
(An unpublished result of mine is mentioned in a footnote!) A few very good mathematicians (Reinhold Baer, Richard S. Pierce, Bjarni Jónsson, M.C.R. Butler, Joseph Rotman, and Fuchs, among others) had written one or two important papers in the field and then moved on to other more fruitful areas.
My teacher, David Arnold and I were almost the first abelian group theorists of any stature to devote themselves primarily to the finite rank torsion free realm.
