CBMR Digest Vol. 14 No. 1 Spring 2001 - Reinventing Steel Pan on Record: Local and Global Dialectics
The history of steel band recordings is tied closely to calypso recordings because calypso melodies have been a staple of the steel band repertoire (Wallis and Malm 1984, 34).
Steel band recordings, it should be pointed out, should not be confused with pan soloists—many of these were included on calypso recordings that comprise an entirely separate genre.
According to Jeffrey Thomas, the earliest recordings of steel pans appear under the English label Decca in 1940, which since the 1930s had “organized expeditions to Trinidad assigned to sample the most current and popular types of local music.” Considered a “novelt[y],” this early “steel music” was not collected by archivists because of wartime constraints.

Reinventing The Steel is an excellent and highly underrated metal album from metal pioneers Pantera that absolutely is worth listening to and owning.
Overall, Reinventing The Steel is an excellent metal album and another gem from heavy metal pioneers Pantera.
It doesn't reinvent anything, isn't as diverse as the band's previous releases, and most of the songwriting isn't that thoughtful in comparison (aside from Revolution Is My Name), but it's an incredibly fun and energetic album to listen to and one that presents metal in all it's unadulterated headbanging glory.

Steel products are continuing to evolve from rusty to revolutionary at a time when U.S. steel production and consumption are reaching record levels despite industry consolidation and work force reductions.
The New Steel Alliance, a consortium of those promoting 21st century steel and its products, said although other material prices have increased, the price for domestic steel, adjusted for inflation, is 30 percent lower now than 20 years ago.
For example, advanced high-strength steels are the fastest-growing new material segment in the automotive market and are redefining steel's role in the industry, according to Andrew Sharkey III, chief executive officer of the American Iron and Steel Institute.

Metal fans may also be interested to know that Reinventing The Steel features a guest appearance by the reigning king of insane guitar solos, Kerry King of Slayer on the track "Goddamn Electric."
Despite this minor shortcoming, ‘Reinventing the Steel’ is still a decent effort from one of today's hardest bands as long as you don't take them too seriously.

Where The Great Southern Trendkill experimented with slower, moodier pieces, Reinventing the Steel finds Pantera sticking to the pulverizing basics of their sound, with the first downtempo, non-distorted guitar part appearing on the next-to-last track, "It Makes Them Disappear," and vanishing about 15 seconds into the song.
In the tradition of the group's best albums, Reinventing the Steel is a nonstop assault on the senses, offering no respite from the intensity until the album has stopped playing.
The bottom line is that the way you feel about Reinventing the Steel will likely depend on whether you object to more of the same; if not, then the lean focus of its attack -- the most concise, actually, since Vulgar Display -- will make it more than worthwhile.

Just two tracks into Reinventing The Steel, and it seems that Pantera--the godfathers of speed metal--have brightened up: "Don't waste your life / Embrace it" roars vocalist Phil Anselmo on "Goddamn Electric", an unusual sentiment to hear amid the pile driver drums and Diamond Darrell's crunching guitar riffs.

One of the most powerful metal bands in the world is back in the race with an album appropriately entitled "Reinventing The Steel", containing three quarters of an hour of pure energy.
This is definitely not the best release from Pantera so far but they still have their characteristic aggressive sound that can not be beaten by many other bands.
There are several great tracks on this album with the old flow but Pantera has got to watch out because there are new bands of very high quality evolving that might steel the crown from the mighty cowboys from hell such as Machine Head.
