washingtonpost.com: William Faulkner's Southern Draw: 'The Reivers'
I read "The Reivers," as I read everything else, not because I had to but because I desperately wanted to, though notes scrawled in my copy remind me that I also read it with an eye to Faulkner's treatment of fl characters and racial issues, about which I wrote a paper.
What is certain is that "The Reivers" is notable for the intimate relationships between a number of its fl and white characters.
One aspect of "The Reivers" that is both interesting and unusual is that it is a coming-of-age novel written not at the beginning of its author's career but at the very end.

Reivers opened brightly and Iain Fullarton was knocked into touch near the visitors line, but it was Llanelli who opened the scoring from the boot of Stephen Jones after four minutes.
Reivers lost Martin Leslie to injury before Llanelli extended their lead with a try from Guy Easterby, his first for the club after a summer transfer from Ebbw Vale, converted by Jones.
Both Reivers' Barry Stewart and Llanelli's Phil Booth were sin-binned after an incident on the ground on which referee Iain Ramage took advice from his touch-judge.

 The Reivers and Kinmont Willie
For many years, I imagined that Scottish reivers were something like the American Wild West cattle rustlers: renegade cowboys who did a bit of thieving on the side.
Of course, he was also a renowned reiver himself, and had plenty of grievance with Lord Scrope, the Warden of the English Middle March.
The reivers were violent, lawless men, with a fierce sense of pride and shifting loyalties.

BBC - Legacies - Myths and Legends - Scotland - Borders - The Border Reivers
From the 13th Century through to the beginning of the 17th, the border lands between England and Scotland were home to the Reivers, lawless gangs who survived by plundering livestock, but who also engaged in other practises such as kidnapping and racketeering.
The lives and deeds of the Reivers were celebrated in the famous Border Ballads, popularised by Sir Walter Scott in the 18th Century.
The Ballads portray the Reivers in a romantic light and as brave, noble and honourable.

 Reivers Way Introduction
The Reivers Way is a walk of great contrasts, from rolling farmland to riverside paths in mature mixed woodland, from the wide open spaces of the Cheviot Hills to the expansive seashore along Northumberland’s “Heritage” coastline.
As James Roberts notes in his excellent and still accurate guide, the name “Reivers Way” was chosen to commemorate the raiders on both sides of the border between England and Scotland for whom the region is (in)famous.
We chose to break our days on the Reivers Way in approximately the same fashion as Roberts did in his guidebook, the exception being diversions on days three and four as recommended by another walker to avoid some of the most difficult and laborious walking en route to Wark.

John Croslin and Kim Longacre's shared vocal duties, particularly on the duets, helped distinguish the Reivers from some of the more staid artists of their ilk, at times making them come across like jangle-pop's answer to X. Tunes like "Things Don't Change," "Araby," and the title track are entrancing guitar jangle at its best.
Their middle two albums, while still fine, had a little less edge to them, but make for great listening nonetheless (and were subsequently reissued with improved sound and bonus tracks).

Many of Faulkner's stories evoke a somber tone of Southern Gothic tragedy based on his observations of racial intolerance, and the decline of traditional Southern values before the forces of greed and modernization.

The Reivers Study Guide Summary by William Faulkner
The Reivers was a popular novel in part because it tells a wonderfully complicated tall tale to a considerable extent in Faulkner's characteristically difficult style and yet is fairly accessible, very funny, and both risque and wholesome in a sense that American readers tend to like.
Somewhat like Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), this story takes an innocent boy with a sure sense of right and wrong into a wild world of gambling, debauchery, prostitution, horse-racing, political corruption, and rowdiness.
