Topic: Rekeying

Authentication of rekey messages in a communication system - Patent 5185795
Manual rekeying is accomplished by connecting a cable from a hand-held keyloading device (also called a key variable loader, or keyloader for short) to the secure unit and downloading the keys from the keyloader into the communication unit by pressing the appropriate buttons on the keyloader.
Rekeying is also performed on a group basis, when a plurality of units are rekeyed with the same keys at substantially the same time due to group affiliation.
A rekey request is sent when a unit's operator is aware of the need to rekey and rekeying has not taken place, for example because the unit was not powered-up during rekeying or was out of RF range of the system.

If rekeying occurs after each join or leave, it is hard to control the synchronization that will arise because of inter-dependencies among rekey messages as well as between rekey and data messages.
New users may have to wait for a batch rekey to get their key, and old users may be able to stay in the group longer than they should be.
Rekeying after each join or leave would be extremely costly, and rekeying too infrequently is bad for usability.

Proceedings of the 8th USENIX Security Symposium, August 23-36, 1999, Washington, D.C.
A join-sensitive rekeying policy, by itself, does not ensure that members who left the group or were ejected from the group are not able to access current session content.
In practice, a join-sensitive rekeying policy is likely to be used in conjunction with a time-sensitive or a leave-sensitive rekeying policy to limit the duration over which past members can access current session content.
In a key hierarchy, rekeying is performed by the distribution a number of keys which is roughly proportional to the log of the group size.

Manual rekeying involves the exchange of key management messages between a KFD and an MR for the purposes of provisioning an MR with encryption keys or other key management-related information, erasing keys in an MR or viewing key management-related information in an MR.
When used with OTAR rekeying procedure, manual rekeying can be used to provision an MR with key management parameters required for OTAR operation in addition to provisioning encryption keys.
Within the manual rekeying standard option, some minimum set of features/procedures are required and are considered mandatory, while other features/procedures are not absolutely needed and are considered optional.

Batch Rekeying for Secure Group Communications1
Batch rekeying improves efficiency because it reduces the number of rekey messages to be signed: one for a batch of requests, instead of one for each.
Batch rekeying also takes advantage of the possible overlap of new keys for multiple rekey requests, and thus reduces the possibility of generating new keys that will not be used.
In individual rekeying, all the keys on the path from the request location to the root of the key tree have to be changed.

Rekeying becomes an issue when a shop receives a paper or faxed estimate that requires being entered into the shop’s estimating system – otherwise known as rekeying.
The need to rekey into other estimating systems is often required and takes even longer.
Rekeying into the same brand of estimating system can be eliminated through the use of the information provider’s proprietary communication network.

Some important parameters when performing multicast rekeying are: number of keys to store by the KS, number of keys to deliver in the Pegueroles, Hernßndez-Serrano, Rico-Novella, Soriano [Page 2] Internet Draft draft-irtf-msec-gdoi-batch-lkh-00.txt June, 2003 initialization stage, bandwidth required for updating the keys and latency for updating the session key [3].
When rekeying is needed, the KS does not send the updated key themselves but the required information that single users need in order to update them.
In every rekeying, the entire tree is updated and all random numbers are recomputed, so two different messages for different rekeyings will have different factors in the message and gcd() algorithm cannot be used.

Due to the dynamic nature of these groups, to preserve secrecy, it is necessary to change the group key whenever the group membership changes.
This interruption is especially necessary if the rekeying is done because a user has left (or is removed).
We split the rekeying cost into two parts: the cost of the critical path ---where each user receives the new group key, and the cost of the non-critical path ---where each user receives any other keys that it needs to obtain.

 Rekeying Redux
Cindy Schnier, co-chair of the committee, said the study found that on average, shops have to rekey data from printed insurer estimates into their own estimating systems for about 28 percent of their jobs.
The shops who responded to the survey said this rekeying process takes an average of about 21 minutes if the estimate was written on an estimating system the shop has, and about 33 minutes if it was written in a different estimating system.
"But some insurers desk-audit estimates, and they have to rekey them, so it would be advantageous to those insurers to be able to use the data this same way," he said.

As acknowledged by the authors, there is still work to be done to consider dynamic partitioning of group users, and more detailed trace based experimental evaluations.

This is a feature of the SSH-2 protocol which allows either side to force another run of the key-exchange phase, changing the encryption and integrity keys for the session.
The problem is that no other SSH-2 implementation currently does session rekeying, and they die in various ways when they receive the rekeying message from SSH2.
Since rekeying is not optional (the receiving side can't refuse to do it), the only sure way to avoid this is to turn off rekeying in SSH2: set RekeyIntervalSeconds to 0 (in

 ACM SIGCOMM 2001
In this paper, we investigate scalability issues of reliable group rekeying, and provide a performance analysis of our group key management system (called keygem) based upon the use of key trees.
Instead of rekeying after each join or leave, we use periodic batch rekeying to improve scalability and alleviate out-of-sync problems between rekey messages as well as between rekey and data messages.
We observe that rekey transport has an eventual reliability and a soft real-time requirement, and that the rekey workload has a sparseness property, that is, each group user only needs to receive a small fraction of the packets that carry a rekey message sent by the key server.

A probabilistic scheme based on pre-deployed symmetric keys is used for implementing secure channels between members for group key distribution.

note that immediate rekeying outperforms delayed rekeying because delayed rekeying may cause several areas to all have to rekey if a member that was once in each of them departs the group completely.
