Commodity production is based on the production of a product which the producer themself does not need, on the basis that their own need can be met by exchange or sale of the surplus product.
Production is not possible without relations of production – humans cannot produce outside of a social structure, whether a nation or a family – relations of production exist for all producers.
The basis of the relations of production is ownership of the means of production.

Relations of production - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Relations of production (German: Produktionsverhaltnisse) is a concept frequently used by Karl Marx in his theory of historical materialism and in Das Kapital.
A social relation can be defined, in the first instance, as (a) a relation between individuals insofar as they belong to a group, or (b) a relation between groups, or (c) a relation between an individual and a group.
In the last chapters of Das Kapital Vol 3, he develops the argument, defining relations of distribution as the "forms" which "express the relationships in which the total value newly produced is distributed among the owners of the various agents of production" (as income and products).

(ii) Productive Forces and the Relations of Production
The relations of production must also change for, to put it simply, a herd of cattle can be owned privately in the way that a herd of buffalo can not.
This is why it would be naive and utopian to try to establish socialist relations of production — where the means of production are owned in common—in a society where most people were still individual handicraft producers or peas ant farmers working small plots of land in isolation from one another.
In fact it is precisely this pressure which builds up to force old production relations to adapt to the new forces of production that is the real cause of every social and political revolution.

 Encyclopedia: Relations of production
Social relation can refer to a multitude of social interactions, regulated by social norms, between two or more people, with each having a social position and performing a social role.
In Das Kapital, Marx illustrates the concept of relations of production with reference to Edward Gibbon Wakefield's theory of colonisation: Das Kapital (Capital) is a very large treatise of political economy written by Karl Marx in German.
Productive forces, productive powers or forces of production [in German, Produktivkrafte] is a central concept in Marxism and historical materialism.

The Violence of Abstraction by Derek Sayer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
If productive forces are not the things they are so often taken to be, then definitions of production relations, and hence Marx’s ‘economic structure of society’;, in terms of ownership of these forces are clearly in some jeopardy.
In feudal society, relations of personal dependence — relations, moreover, not founded upon ‘effective control’ of the means of production, which Marx assumes the direct producer to enjoy — are essential relations of production, and hence, consistently with the stipulations of the 1859 Preface, form the ‘groundwork of society’;.
Relations between capital and labour, for instance, were frequently structured through patriarchal, master-servant norms, well into the nineteenth century (and understanding this might make the ‘transition’ to capitalism that much easier to grasp: not as a total rupture, but as a subtler gradation of forms).

This materialism is made of two elements: the forces, or the technology and labor involved in production both economic and political, and the relations, which control the means of production or have economic ownership.
In the feudal society, the political forces of the kings and nobility had their relations with the economic forces of the villages through serfdom.
To Marx, this mode of production is completely irrational because it contradicts its own necessity towards growth through the destruction of its smaller elements and although it seems to have eliminated real scarcity through overproduction, there is really an artificial scarcity maintained due to the lack of purchasing power.

 Karl Marx extracts
Each new productive force, insofar as it is not merely a quantitative extension of productive forces already known (for instance the bringing into cultivation of fresh land), causes a further development of the division of labour.
In the social production of their existence, men inevitably enter Into definite relations, which are independent of their will, namely relations of production appropriate to a given stage in the development of their material forces of production.
No social order is ever destroyed before all the productive forces for which it is sufficient have been developed, and new superior relations of production never replace older ones before the material conditions for their existence have matured within the framework of the old society.

As the title suggests, the authors are interested in the future trajectory of lean production: whether there will be a single trajectory or a number of different approaches emerging, and whether or not these approaches are stable and predictable.
They contend that, since lean production is the best way to organize production to improve productivity and quality while reducing costs, all firms must adopt the lean model or lose out competitively.
In the introduction, the editors refer to the critics who view lean production as essentially old-fashioned speed-up and a new way of maximizing managerial control, and to the sceptics who doubt that lean production is anything more than a fad.

It has been widely claimed that knowledge production in contemporary western societies is undergoing some kind of fundamental change: these claims form the background for this paper.
It focuses on relations between different intellectual, and other, communities, the problematization of 'traditional' disciplinary boundaries and divisions and, in particular, the significance of such issues for sociology.
It is argued that processes of 'simulation' can be discerned: firstly, the simulation of certain forms of order in computer scientists' representations of their own work in communications across boundaries; secondly, the simulation of a separate ethnographic object of study by the social scientist.
