Relative Height   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Another pictorial cue to depth is the relative height of objects in the painting.
To understand relative height, think of the horizon dividing the world into two roughly equal portions of the world, the ground below and the sky above.
The general rule is that the closer to the level of the horizon, usually near the middle, the farther away the object appears.

McMansion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The relatively low price of McMansions as compared to traditional mansions rarely allows for the structure to be blended with its environment, so lots are typically bulldozed to bare dirt, removing all native plants and trees.
This is often in the form of an atrium -style hall which extends upwards through the height of the house and which has a "grand staircase" (sometimes derided as a "Lawyer Foyer"), or, alternatively, may include a " great room ".
This room is often tall and may have a cathedral ceiling following the pitch of the roofline, or it may have a balcony that serves as part of the upstairs hallway.

 Visual formatting model details
If 'height' has a computed value of 'auto' and 'width' also has a computed value of 'auto', the element's intrinsic height is the used value of 'height', it has one.
If it has block-level children, the height is the distance between the top border-edge of the topmost block-level child box that doesn't have margins collapsed through it and the bottom border-edge of the bottommost block-level child box that doesn't have margins collapsed through it.
If the height of the containing block is not specified explicitly (i.e., it depends on content height), and this element is not absolutely positioned, the percentage value is treated as '0' (for 'min-height') or 'none' (for 'max-height').

Patent 4067395: Land leveler with relative height control
Conversely, when a rise in contour is sensed by a relative dropping of gauge wheels 24 or an elevating of wheels 23, blade 18 is lowered to remove soil and cut-away the rise.
These cut-and-fill functions are preformed by adjusting the height of the main frame 14 and blade 18, in the example at the rear portion of the main frame, by rotating a rock shaft 25 from which extend cranks 26 mounting main wheels 23.
Conversely, a rise in the contour is cut away by lowering blade 18 as the drop of gauge wheels 24 relative to main wheels 23 causes gauge arm 57 to move its end 67 upward and to carry down limit switch roller 82 against the rising face 86 of down cam 78.

FLOW STRUCTURES AROUND SUBMERGED SPUR DIKES  WITH VERIOUS RELATIVE HEIGHT

In this study, relative height of spur dike to water depth is chosen as a design item and its effects on flow structures in spur-dike zones were investigated by using PIV method.
However, when the relative spur-dike height becomes more than half of the water depth, there occurs an extremely increase of the inflow discharge from the front of the second spur dike and the outflow discharge from the back of the first spur dike.

 Introduction
We recognize that the height of various components of a stand (perhaps by layer and/or by species) provides important information to various users of forest data and advocate that these height measurements be maintained.
They recommended that "true" top height be defined as the average of the heights measured on a random sample of non-empty 0.01 ha plots, rather than the average height of the 100 largest diameter trees on a hectare.
For a given canopy layer in a stand, top height is defined as the expected value of the height of the four largest suitable trees by species, on circular plots 0.04 ha in area.

The height of a non-replaced inline element's boxes is given by the element's (possibly inherited) 'line-height' value.
The 'height' property doesn't apply, but the height of the box is given by the 'line-height' property.
This means that if the height of a line box is shorter than the outer edges of the boxes it contains, backgrounds and colors of padding and borders may "bleed" into adjacent line boxes.

 Topographic prominence
In topography, prominence, also known as autonomous height, relative height or prime factor (in Europe), is a concept used in the categorization of hills and mountains.
It describes how tall a peak is relative to neighbouring peaks, and in a way that makes precise the intuition that the world's second-highest mountain is K2, not a small bump near the summit of Everest.
Prominence is interesting to mountaineers because it is an objective measurement that is strongly correlated with the subjective significance of a summit.

 Local Relative Height
Possible values for relative height are 1 (all nearby points are lower, location is likely to be a peak) to 0 (all nearby points are higher, location is likely to be a depression).
The increments of relative height are set by the size of the moving window.
Image on left is relative height calculated with a 3x3 pixel moving window (4.4 cm^2 area for 7 mm spacing grid), and the other three are for a 5x5 pixel moving window (6.25 cm^2 area for 5 mm spacing grid).

Patent 5090091: Bale opening method and device having rollers and grate bars adjustable in height relative to one ...
There is further provided a roller and/or grate setting device for adjusting a height level of the detaching rollers and/or grates relative to one another for effecting penetration of the detaching rollers into a top bale surface to different depths thereof during detaching operation.
The switching of the rocker 11 is effected at the end of each pass; the grates 3 and 4 remain at the same height, that is, the underface of the mid portion 3a of the grate 3 is substantially coplanar with the underface of the mid portion 4a of the grate 4.
The relative vertical shift--effected by the setting devices 32a-32f--between the detaching rollers 5 and 6, between the grates 3 and 4 and between the pressing rollers 8a and 8b is thus effected relative to and independently from the housing 2 of the detaching device.

When judging an object’s distance, we consider its height in our visual field relative to other objects.
The closer an object is to the horizon in our visual field, the farther away we perceive it to be.
For example, the wildebeest that are higher in this photograph appear farther away than those that are lower.

Computing Relative Elevation from Stereo Matches
Based on these observations, we developed an approach in which a relative measure of height with respect to a ground plane is computed from the matches without requiring the knowledge of the full set of camera parameters.
This height is relative in the sense that it is a multiple of the true height by a unknown scale factor.
The relative height is also used for limiting the search in the stereo matching.

Boston.com / Business / IBM cancer lawsuit in jurors' hands   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Since opening arguments in November, plaintiffs' attorneys have argued that some disk-coating chemicals were so toxic that they stained supposedly stainless steel buckets, and IBM's fresh air vents were located so close to the chemical exhaust ducts that workers inhaled a host of dangerous compounds.
The company has argued the relative height of the ducts mattered more than their proximity, and noted it encouraged workers to visit with staff medical experts for testing and treatment of any disorder starting in the 1960s -- long before wellness checks and health fares became common practices.
Because of the heart-wrenching anecdotes from cancer victims and relatives, many companies settle such cases out of court -- sometimes for hundreds of millions of dollars.

In some (most?) browsers, leave off the height and it will be adjusted proportionally.
The height should be adjusted proportional so that the resulting thumbnail is not distorted.

A simple answer to his question is: Because I wanted optimum flexibility for the header and navigation, and to keep the navigation the same distance from the logo, no matter how the text is resized.
Static basically means an element’s position is not modified, and the element will appear in the expected normal flow of the document in context with other sibling elements and containing blocks.
But since the header varies in height from browser to browser based on default text sizes, this means the right column would sometimes overlap the header if the header grows in height.
