Release is a real return to the form that went slightly iffy somewhere between Behaviour and Nightlife; it deserves to catapult Pet Shop Boys back to the top of the album charts for a very long time, though it probably won't.
This album is completely different from any of the earlier ones, abandoning electronics in 70 per cent of the songs, which does not mean that "Release" is their best album.
I have listened to some Promo tracks from Release, and it is a bit of a departure from their recent Nightlife album.

The Pet Shop Boys eighth studio album Release, though not the rock album it was purported to be, does have enough guitar (courtesy of ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr) and percussion to create a sound that's as sumptuous as it is unexpected.
"Release" is a return to the relaxed, melancholy atmosphere of their classic "Behaviour." Perhaps this is where the Pet Shop Boys' groove is. The album's packaging is the dependable PSB-style professional design, with lyrics alternating stark drawings of various flowers in various stages of life.
Release reveals PSB as one of the more successful bands ever to age gracefully within the confines of popular music.

Upon their return from the tour, the group met the album with mixed feelings, arguing that SMiLE's obscure lyrics and insanely dense compositions strayed too far from the norm to be considered for release.
Ten of these mixes were released as part of the 1993 box set Good Vibrations-- including many tantalizing instrumental variations on "Heroes and Villains" that suggested exactly why the circuitous, ambitious, and often self-referential music was so difficult to assemble without direction from its creator.
As a result, arguments have surged for close to 40 years over the album's playing order, tracklist, and which versions of songs uncovered from the sessions were meant for album inclusion.
