Relegation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the sports leagues — especially soccer leagues — of many countries, relegation (or demotion) means the mandated transfer of the worst team(s) (usually the bottom three) of a higher league into a lower league at the end of the season.
Promotion and relegation have the effect of regularly rearranging the leagues according to the teams' playing strength, and also prevents the games of the not-so-good teams of each league from becoming boring towards the end of the season.
Relegation can potentially mean severe hardship or even bankruptcy for demoted clubs.

One argument in favour of the (A continent (the third largest) in the western hemisphere connected to South America by the Isthmus of Panama) North American system is that the embarassment in coming last is often enough to cause bottom teams to play hard at the end of the season.
Another is that teams in lower grades often struggle financially, so relegation can potentially mean severe hardship or even (A legal process intended to insure equality among the creditors of a corporation declared in bankruptcy) bankruptcy for demoted clubs.

The key to promotion relegation systems is that the first few boats to finish in a heat are promoted to the next higher heat, and the last few boats are relegated to the next lower heat.
After the seeding races are finished and for the duration of the promotion relegation part of the event, the boats are shuffled a bit after each race.
Boats are assigned to a heat for the first race, and based on their finish in that heat, are then assigned to an appropriate heat for the next race, A, B, C, etc, depending on the size of the regatta.

Quin Calls for End to Relegation Madness
Harlequins' chief executive Mark Evans yesterday added fresh fuel to the debate over automatic relegation from the Zurich Premiership, claiming it would be "madness" and "detrimental to the game" if an established club such as Newcastle or Bath lost their elite status at the end of the season.
We were in trouble last year and played our way out of it but had we been relegated half the non-playing staff would have lost their jobs and most of the players would have gone too."
Evans said that investment in grounds was essential to the long-term growth of the club game and was horrified at the increasing possibility of Newcastle and their chairman David Thompson suffering relegation, having ploughed £12m into redeveloping their Kingston Park headquarters.

John Dewey [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
There are two important implications of this line of thought that distinguish it from the metaphysical tradition.
First, although inquiry is aimed at resolving the precarious and confusing aspects of experience to provide a stable basis for action, this does not imply the unreality of the unstable and contingent, nor justify its relegation to the status of mere appearance.
Second, the fact that the meanings we attribute to natural events might change in any particular in the future as renewed inquiries lead to more adequate understandings of natural events (as was implied by Dewey's fallibilism) does not entail that our experience of the world at any given time may as a whole be errant.
