In statistics (A branch of applied mathematics concerned with the collection and interpretation of quantitative data and the use of probability theory to estimate population parameters) reliability is the accuracy of the scores of a measure.
In the test-retest method, reliability is estimated as the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient (The most commonly used method of computing a correlation coefficient between variables that are linearly related) between two administrations of the same measure.
Reliability estimates from one sample might differ from those of a second sample (beyond what might be expected due to sampling variations) if the second sample is drawn from a different population because the true reliability is different in this second population.

Reliability theory developed apart from the mainstream of probability and statistics, and was used originally as a tool to help nineteenth century maritime insurance and life insurance companies compute profitable rates to charge their customers.
In statistics reliability is the accuracy of the scores of a measure.
Statistics is a broad mathematical discipline which studies ways to collect, summarize and draw conclusions from data.

Statistical models appropriate for any of these topics are generically called "time-to-event" models.
Death or failure is called an "event", and the goal is to project or forecast the rate of events for a given population or probability of an event for an individual.
It should be noted that when reliability is considered from the perspective of the consumer of a technology or service, actual reliability measures may differ dramatically from perceived reliability.

While it couldn't match Nokia's reliability statistics and active load-balancing performance, it brought something else to the table: a stateful firewall.
If the power, reliability and expandability of the Sun E450 server isn't required in your network, an Intel server with Windows NT and two CPUs would be about one-tenth of the price of the Sun SPARC system.
While Sun has a reputation for reliable equipment, it's difficult for a product that combines hard drives, power supplies, fans, a general purpose operating system and software from multiple vendors to match the reliability of a single-vendor product in a small package.
