Reliant Engineering was started in 1935 by T. Williams, who had been responsible for the design of the Raleigh three wheeled car.
Initially the Reliant was a delivery van with a single front wheel and an Austin 7 engine and 3-speed gearbox driving the rear axle by means of a propeller shaft.
The company went into receivership in December 1995 and was purchased from the receiver by Jonathan Heynes (son of William Haynes of Jaguar fame).

 Reliant Motors
It is believed Williams called the company Reliant as some of the old Raleigh parts he used had the initial R on them and so he needed a company name starting with the same letter.
Reliant was then acquired by the Avonex Group on 16th January 1995, who also had to call in the receivers in December 1995 Reliant was then purchased in April 1996 by "a consortium of Businessmen".
Reliant have made 4-wheeler sports cars along side their 3-wheeler range over the years (the Sabre and the Scimitar etc) and in the 1980's there was even the Quasar Motorcycle that was a revolutionary covered motorbike capable of 100mph+ and used the Reliant 850cc engine.

Reliant felt that the design was too adventurous for the time and the project was shelved.
Reliant liked the proposal and a mock up was made and married to a newly designed chassis.

Motors: Planning for Motor Failure   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Motors complying with the NEMA Premium™ efficiency standard (established by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association) are 1 to 4 percent more efficient than standard motors, and, given that motors often operate 40 to 80 hours per week, even small efficiency improvements can yield tremendous energy savings.
Improper repairs can reduce motor efficiency by as much as 5 percent, but most motors can be restored to their original efficiency if best practices are used in the repair process.
Developing a motor management plan in advance of motor failures can help your company's bottom line by ensuring that the right decisions are made and that the right resources will be available when a motor fails.

The motor in this case may actually be operating at about 70 percent of its full load, with the extra energy dissipated across the throttling valve.
Motor and load systems that deliver rated flow less than 40 percent of the time are also good variable-speed prospects, particularly if their average throughput over time is below 60 percent.
Induction motors will operate hotter with an ASD because of harmonics and other impurities in the electric power they provide to the motor and also as a result of the slower rotating speed of the motor's integral cooling fans.

In 1934 the Raleigh Cycle Company decided to discontinue the manufacture of their 3-wheeled vehicles and their Works Manager; T.L.  The Reliant Robin | Today's issues | Guardian Unlimited
The Reliant Motor Company, probably the biggest force in what remains of the indigenous British car industry, is to phase out production of the much loved, much derided, Robin three-wheeler.
Much of its new prosperity now rests on the import and distribution of foreign rivals such as the Ligier Ambra, which at £6,500 costs around two thirds as much as the preposterously expensive Robin.
The Robin, essentially a survivor of the bubblecar era, has become almost the generic name for triangular motors.

 BBC Staffordshire - Reliant
Reliant has been largely neglected in terms of serious analysis of its important role in the development of vehicle design and construction.
The company developed an amazing degree of self-sufficiency with the design and production of its own high economy aluminium engine, finding applications not only in a long line of small cars, but also in low-cost motor racing and a variety of industrial situations.
After a series of changes of management from the 1980s to 1997 (and a move to Burntwood), Reliant finally abandoned car manufacturing in 2001, and today the company is based in Cannock, concentrating on importing a range of “speciality” vehicles, including the “BeUp”, a four-wheeler described as a cross between a car and a motorcycle.

Yet the company has received so little recognition: Reliant is almost universally treated as if were either 'just another' failed British underdog, or a joke company which hopelessly peddled a 'ridiculous' product for so many years.
I've been researching Reliant, its history and its products, on and off since I was 10 years old; like many young boys, I was interested in car design, and became especially fascinated by the 'specialist' parts of the motor industry, from sports cars to microcars.
For a while I have been planning a series of short articles on aspects of Reliant's history, and these will be posted as they are completed, on the Reliant section of this website.
