Reliant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Reliant was founded in 1935 by T L Williams to take over making the Raleigh 3 wheeler delivery van which he had designed in 1933 and Raleigh no longer wished to make.
Reliant also built a four wheeled version of the Reliant Robin called the Reliant Kitten ; the forerunner to this was the Reliant Rebel and during the 1980s a utility / pickup vehicle called the Reliant Fox.
Reliant's own aluminium alloy engine is also used as the replacement for the Austin Seven engine by the 750 Motor Club in their Formula 750 motor sport.

Reliant Rebel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Reliant Rebel was a small glass-fibre car produced by Reliant between 1964 and 1973, conceived as an alternative to the Austin Mini and Hillman Imp.
Due to the use of glass-fibre, the body was proclaimed in advertising to be "its own garage".
Engines varied from 598cc/700cc/748cc (although sometimes later 848cc Reliant engines are retro-fitted) and the maximum speed was around 70mph.

The Rebel was launched it 1964 with Reliant's 598cc aluminium-alloy four pot OHV engine.
The aptly named Rebel (being the first four-wheeled economy Reliant) was available in both saloon and estate variants, both offering fuel economy averaging around 60mpg.
Personally, I think that the rebel has a nicer feel to it than the Kitten, and is probably equally useable, apart from performance.

Reliant made a decision in 1958 and an appointment in 1959 that were to change the company in a big way.
Reliant acquired the rights to the Ashley Laminates bodywork and produced a car with four wheels for Autocars called the ‘Sabra’, named coincidentally after a species of cactus peculiar to Israel, its national emblem and used affectionately to describe young active Israeli!1.
Reliant’s production capacity was stretched to the limit and around this time and into the seventies the company was employing some 2,500 local personnel in almost a quarter of a million square feet of assembly space and an annual turnover of around £12m.

 Reliant
Reliant is an auto manufacturer based in Tamworth, England which is notable for building Glass Fibre three wheeled cars, such as the Reliant Robin[?], Reliant Regal[?], Reliant Rialto[?] and parts supplier for the 1970s Bond Bug[?]
Most of these quirky and distinctly British small cars used an engine derived from the 700cc 1930s Austin Seven[?] which was replicated in aluminium and gradually increased in size through 750cc and finally the current 850cc variant.
Reliant is also an electricity corporation, formally known as Houston Power & Light.

 Connections: Reliant
When Reliant took over Bond Cars in February 1969, the similarities between the two companies were clear to see: both had built their reputations with small-engined three-wheelers, before diversifying into four-wheeled sports cars in the Sixties – Reliant with the Scimitar and Bond with the Equipe.
In his final days at Reliant he was involved in the preparations for the production of the rival MCW Metrocab, which Reliant went on to build until the end of the 1980s.
The lower photograph taken by Reliant historian Dan Lockton raises some interesting questions as to whether the PR2 might have had an afterlife: "...the picture is a GRP bodyshell I photographed at Reliant at Twogates, Tamworth, in 1996.

 1972 Bond Bug
Most Reliants were three-wheelers, though claiming to be full-fledged cars as opposed to motorcycles from the very beginning.
Although the Bond plant in Preston was eventually shut down, another Bond car was produced under Reliant management – the Bond Bug of 1970, a completely fresh new wedge-shaped car with a fibreglass body.
The new car, being technically a motorcycle, was not allowed at the Motor Show, so Reliant scored a publicity coup by building a Bug whose body was joined Siamese-style back to back and showing it as a "four-wheeler" instead.

It is believed Williams called the company Reliant as some of the old Raleigh parts he used had the initial R on them and so he needed a company name starting with the same letter.
Reliant was then acquired by the Avonex Group on 16th January 1995, who also had to call in the receivers in December 1995 Reliant was then purchased in April 1996 by "a consortium of Businessmen".
Reliant have made 4-wheeler sports cars along side their 3-wheeler range over the years (the Sabre and the Scimitar etc) and in the 1980's there was even the Quasar Motorcycle that was a revolutionary covered motorbike capable of 100mph+ and used the Reliant 850cc engine.

Reliant has been largely neglected in terms of serious analysis of its important role in the development of vehicle design and construction.
Rebel Without Applause covers Reliant from its insecure origins in 1930s Tamworth, through to a period in the 1950s where it was seen as just another player in the overcrowded three-wheeler market.
After a series of changes of management from the 1980s to 1997 (and a move to Burntwood), Reliant finally abandoned car manufacturing in 2001, and today the company is based in Cannock, concentrating on importing a range of “speciality” vehicles, including the “BeUp”, a four-wheeler described as a cross between a car and a motorcycle.
