	Reliant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Reliant was founded in 1935 by T L Williams to take over making the Raleigh 3 wheeler delivery van which he had designed in 1933 and Raleigh no longer wished to make.
		Reliant also built a four wheeled version of the Reliant Robin called the Reliant Kitten ; the forerunner to this was the Reliant Rebel and during the 1980s a utility / pickup vehicle called the Reliant Fox (first built in Greece by MEBEA).
		Reliant's own aluminium alloy engine is also used as the replacement for the Austin Seven engine by the 750 Motor Club in their Formula 750 motor sport.

		Reliant's first Scimitar was a coupé based upon the styling of a Daimler SP250 prototype (renamed the SX250) and the chassis of a Reliant Sabre.

		Indeed, her royal highness the Princess Anne was given a Reliant Scimitar by her parents for her 18th birthday, a sporting estate car model, which emerged three years later in 1968, and was exhibited at the Motor Show as the revolutionary Reliant Scimitar GTE.

		When Reliant took over Bond Cars in February 1969, the similarities between the two companies were clear to see: both had built their reputations with small-engined three-wheelers, before diversifying into four-wheeled sports cars in the Sixties – Reliant with the Scimitar and Bond with the Equipe.
		In his final days at Reliant he was involved in the preparations for the production of the rival MCW Metrocab, which Reliant went on to build until the end of the 1980s.
		The lower photograph taken by Reliant historian Dan Lockton raises some interesting questions as to whether the PR2 might have had an afterlife: "...the picture is a GRP bodyshell I photographed at Reliant at Twogates, Tamworth, in 1996.

		Stevens, an advertising copywriter from Perth in WA, had read about the Scimitar in motoring magazines and says it was high on his list, either that or a Volvo 1800 ES, "both similar types of cars", but Volvo stopped making the 1800 ES when he was in London.
		He describes his "apple-green", fibreglass-bodied Scimitar, which he says is basically "a stock-standard Ford Essex", as "an interesting compromise for a car".
		Reliant and Ogle Design came up with new innovative Reliant styles - Reliant produced everything from sports cars to tiny utes - and in 1964 the Reliant Scimitar GT Coupe appeared.

		The Scimitar GTE (Grand Touring Escape) used a Ford 3 litre V6 engine and was the first car to have its back seats fold down separately, a technique that even today is copied by nearly all hatchback cars.
		The Middlebridge Scimitar looked identical to the SE6 but had Colour co-ordinated bumpers, PAS, and the Ford 2.9 V6 injection engine that was found in the Granada and Sierra's.
		The last Reliant Robin was collected by its owner on February 14th 2001 and was a first prize in a competition run by the Sun Newspaper Lazarus was to return for another year however, when B & N Plastics began making the Robin under licence from April 2001.

		Reliant was known for its three-wheelers when the Israeli company Autocars chose it to build a range of fibreglass bodied cars including a sports car, the Sabra.

		The Reliant Scimitar Coupe was introduced at the 1964 Earls Court Motorshow.
		Early models used a straight Six Ford engine as used in the Zodiac, although this unit was tuned by Reliant to produce over 120BHP as opposed to the standard Ford engine which produced around 88BHP.
		In 1966, the Scimitar Coupe was fitted with improved front suspension to improve handling and the straight six engine was replaced by a Ford three litre V6.

		The new car was actually derived from the earlier cars with the original moulds being quartered and an additional 4" added to the length with 3" added to the width.
		The 3.0 litre 'Essex' engine had been the mainstay of Scimitar production, but in late 1979 Reliant introduced the final variant of the G.T.E. theme, that of the SE6b which was essentially a 6a but with 'Cologne' Ford V6 2.8 litre engine and detailed body and interior changes.
		Production of the Reliant Scimitar G.T.E. ceased in November 1986, over 20 years after the company first introduced the name.

		I recognise that Scimitars are a "Few" years old and Problems can occur due to Age, i.e.
		I realise that there are a greater range of Scimitars but this information is mainly for the GTE SE5 and SE5a, my area of interest.
		The problem arises that due to the age of the Scimitars sludge/gunge etc will build up in the cooling system and if this has not been addressed throughout the Life of the Car problems can occur.
