Pink Floyd returned to the fore of rock music in 1987, minus Roger Waters, with A Momentary Lapse of Reason and one of the biggest rock shows of the decade.
Pink Floyd's The Wall changed rock music forever by combining brilliant songs, a tragic story, grand spectacle and metaphor all into one monster of an album.
Relics is a greatest hits album bridging the gap between original leader Syd Barrett's baroque psychedelic pop-single bent and the more ponderous musical pretensions of Roger Waters.

The album was only available on cassette, 8-track and LP for many years and not on CD(I first got this album on cassette in December of 1987).
Relics hit #152 on Billboard in 1971 but the album is now regarded as a cult classic and a good taster of the Syd Barrett era Floyd.
Pink Floyd should really be divided into two bands, the early band and the big huge stadium band, and there's no need to compare the two.

Up to the point the album was released in 1971, many of the numbers had only been released as singles, while others had appeared on various Floyd albums.
When the LP was released in the United States, it sported strange masks — actually bottle openers with someone sticking his or her tongue through the mouth opening.

 Pink Floyd
You see, early Pink Floyd was led by a little nutbag who went by the name of Syd Barrett (whose solo career I have reviewed here).
Seriously, this album is a 40 minute document of everything which made Syd cool, essentially backed by the rhythm section of what would become the world famous Pink Floyd.
While I am certainly bothered that early Floyd does not get the credit and airplay it deserves, and I am vehement in stressing that Pink Floyd is more than the three albums that normally get all the attention, this should not at all be taken to mean that I disrespect the "classic era" albums.

Dark Side of the Moon is a great album, though I can't see myself putting it on at any given time, seeing as I can enjoy it in the form of a laser light show or radio station "midnight album" almost any time I choose.
The corporate years of Pink Floyd escape me these days, and while at one point in my life you could find me intentionally rocking out to The Wall or even A Momentary Lapse of Reason, nowadays it's a rare mood indeed that has me hankering to hear that stuff.
The album it most resembles is Chips From the Chocolate Fireball by the Dukes of Stratosphear, though with much less of a winking sense of humor and overall much less of a pop instinct.

 Relics - Pink Floyd
It might not be regarded as a classic psychedelic masterpiece in the manner of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and it certainly won't ever achieve the multiple platinum status of Dark Side of the Moon, but it's a pretty good place to start with the band's early catalog.
Originally issued in 1971, Relics culls from the band's first five singles (two A-sides and three B-sides, including the non-album pop classics "See Emily Play" and "Arnold Layne") and picks album material that capitalizes on the band's versatility while making it a thoroughly palatable listen.
Without a doubt, the disc is an essential part of the band's discography, not to be disregarded in lieu of its overlap with studio album material.

The main interest for collectors is the track Embryo, which originally only appeared in January 1970 on a scarce Various Artists compilation album promoting Pink Floyd's UK label Harvest Records entitled Picnic - A Breath of Fresh Air, and a former concert staple in a greatly elongated form.
Also unique to Works, the tracks Brain Damage and Eclipse are presented as alternate versions, possibly stereo mixes from the master tapes of the quadraphonic edition The Dark Side of the Moon.
