Relict Trillium (Trillium reliquum) Species Profile
Relict trillium is one of the first trillium species in Georgia and South Carolina to appear in the early spring (NatureServe 2003).
Relict trillium is a perennial herb with 3 mottled leaves at the top of an S-shaped, somewhat decumbent stem, approximately 5 to 25 cm in length, often with the leaf whorl resting on the leaf litter (Patrick et.
The bract shape in relict trillium, however, is elliptic with a convex outline from the middle to the apex.

RELICT   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
My Webster's says a relict is (1) a widow, (2) a persistent remnant of an otherwise extinct flora or fauna, or (3) a relief feature or rock remaining after other parts have disappeared.
In modern times, it seems odd-even sad-that a human being would be remembered as a widow or remnant rather than as a wife, a mother or joyful human being in and of herself.
The parishioner who found the word is herself a "relict." I have been one myself, and recently my nephew became one when his wife died.

The most distinctive aspects of the relict darter are features of pigmentation and morphology of the dorsal fins of breeding males.
Because the relict darter inhabits only short stream reaches, it is vulnerable to extirpation from accidental, toxic chemical spills.
Relict darter research needs include: life history information (spawning season and behavior, habitat requirements, age and growth, and food habits); propagation and reintroduction techniques; and habitat improvement techniques.

relict: A remnant or survivor; a widow
It may be a George III half-penny, a lead token, a fragment from a Roman brooch, a 17th-century lead musket ball, or a decorative metal fitting from the end of a long since decayed leather strap.
The oldest English sense of "relict" is extinct—or at least obsolete.
"Relict" was also used to refer to a widow at one time, but now that sense is more or less limited to legal uses.

As well as common temperate zone species, a number of endemic and relict forms, with restricted distributions, are found.
Relict species, which have been preserved since geological time practically unchanged, are an important component of Armenia's botanical diversity.
It is estimated that between 150 and 200 relict species occur, although accurate determination is limited by gaps in the fossil record.

The relict darter has been and continues to be impacted by water quality and habitat deterioration resulting from stream channelization, siltation contributed by poor land use practices, and water pollutants.
The relict darter is endemic to the Bayou du Chien watershed in extreme western Kentucky.
Adult relict darters are concentrated in the headwater areas in slow-flowing pools, usually associated with gravel, sand, and leaf litter substrates near fallen tree branches, undercut banks, or overhanging stream-bank vegetation (Warren and Burr 1991).

 Relict Glacial Drainageway Ecosystem Description
A striking example of the fourth type of Relict Glacial Drainageway, the spring fen, lies at the edge of the project area between two moraines northwest of Tustumena Lake.
In abandoned Relict Drainageways, uniform plant communities are often segregated linearly, parallel to flow, while in Drainageways adjacent to modern stream courses, plant communities are frequently mixed together.
On the first type, wide abandoned Relict Glacial Drainageways, a wet linear center, usually dominated by creeping sedge, is bordered by a well-developed hummocky ericaceous peatland margin and a forested toeslope.

The relict sea salts were derived from discharge of ground water from a deep source in the Surficial aquifer.

Since relict leopard frogs were rediscovered in eight springs in the 1990s near Lake Mead and along the Virgin River, frogs have disappeared from two of these sites in the last decade.
The damming of the Colorado River and the formation of Lake Mead Lake in 1935, and Lake Mojave in 1951 flooded relict leopard frog habitat, reduced connectivity between the remaining populations, and altered the hydrologic regime necessary to maintain relict leopard frog habitats.
The remaining relict leopard frog populations suffer from low genetic variation and are very vulnerable to extinction due to population fragmentation and the small size and isolation of their remaining habitat.

Pine relicts are southern Wisconsin pine forests that have persisted since the last glacier receded some 12,000 years ago when a cooler climate was favorable for the growth of pine forests.
The relict communities are unlike the northern pine forests because they contain both northern and southern plant species.
Between the relicts and surrounding them is forested land dominated by white oak with bur and red oak, fl cherry, white birch, and shagbark and bitternut hickory.

SILICATE SOURCES OF THICK, RELICT SOILS ON THE EDWARDS PLATEAU, CENTRAL TEXAS
We studied the distribution of the thick, relict soils with elevation and lithology, as well as the grain size, clay-sized mineralogy, and the neodymium isotopic composition of a thick, upland soil in Kerr County.
This interpretation is further supported by mineralogical differences between the surficial and lower horizons of the thick soil profile and between the modern, thin and relict, thick soils.
We propose that the silicate material in the relict, thick soils was derived from overlying, clay-rich strata such as the locally-eroded Del Rio Clay.

DESCRIPTION AND REPRODUCTION: A perennial herb, relict trillium differs from other sessile-flowered trilliums in three respects (1) decumbent or S-curved stems, distinctively-shaped anthers, and by the color and shape of its leaves.
This plant flowers in early spring, with flowers that are greenish to brownish purple or sometimes pure yellow.
Although the historic range of relict trillium is unknown, the existing populations were probably much larger.
