  Forest Raven
The Forest Raven (Corvus tasmanicus) is a large Australian species that inhabits the island state of Tasmania.
It has a proportionately larger bill than the mainland species and also a slightly shorter tail and is the sole representative of the genus Corvus in Tasmania.
The suggestion that this form be given specific rank and be known as the Relict Raven (Corvus boreus) appears not to have gathered favour, and the Relict Raven remains classified as a subspecies, C.

Crow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As a group they show remarkable examples of intelligence; it would not be at all an exaggeration to characterize crows as being to birds what higher primates (including humans) are are to mammals.
Crows, and especially ravens, often feature in legends or mythology as portents or harbingers of doom or death, because of their dark plumage, unnerving calls, and tendency to eat carrion.
In mythology and folklore as a whole, crows tend to be symbolic more of the spiritual aspect of death, or the transition of the spirit into the afterlife, whereas ravens tend more often to be associated with the negative (physical) aspect of death.

If the California birds represent a relict population (of say the Ice Ages), there is some evidence—an intermingling of the two genetic groups among birds from Washington and Idaho—that they are rejoining the raven mainstream.

Many taxa with disjunct area, especially relict woody plants, occur in these two geographical regions, indicating that a homogeneous forest vegetation covered large areas of the northern hemisphere during most of the Tertiary [5].
After the ice sheet retreated some taxa were able to migrate and re-colonise large areas forming the modern vegetation, whereas some species (relicts) still remain within the old refugial area.
Some studies have compared Southeast Asian and North American refugia with similar areas in the Caucasus to show that relicts are preserved there too [6,11].
