Reseat relief valve - Patent 4432389
A relief valve with a low hysteresis closing curve with a fixed seat and a spring-biased poppet which is guided for longitudinal movement by an axial guide sleeve and aligns with its seat by pivoting about a fixed point through a small angle of rotation.
Relief valves, from their beginning with a simple ball and spring, have had widely varying characteristics as well as problems, many of which were ignored in the past.
To machine the parts of a relief valve with close enough tolerance to control the maximum misalignment is impractical and would cause the parts to bind, which destroys the ability of the valve to open and close at a specific pressure level.

Principles of Relief Valves - Fisher Regulators
This type of relief valve may be used where venting to the atmosphere is acceptable, when the process fluid is compatible with the soft disk, and when relief pressure variations are allowable.
These relief valves are also commonly installed with a regulator in a natural gas system farm tap, in pneumatic lines used to operate air drills, jackhammers, and other pneumatic equipment, and in many other applications.
Relief setpoint is determined by a combination of the relief valve and regulator springs; this design generally requires significant pressure buildup to reach its maximum relief flow rate.

 Relief Valve
The relief valve’s job is to protect the boiler against the dangers of thermal expansion.
A modern relief valve uses a spring-loaded diaphragm to hold the valve closed.
You should also keep the relief valve’s boiler tapping full size, and of course, make sure there are no valves between the boiler and the relief valve that could be accidentally closed.

pressure relief valve, axelson relief valves
An Axelson pilot operated pressure relief valve is designed to be used on oil and gas production systems, compressor stations, gas transmission (pipeline) facilities, storage systems and in all gas processing plants; whenever there is a need to exhaust the overpressure volume of gas, vapor and/or liquid.
Axelson pilot operated relief valves operate on the principal of unequal areas exposed to the same pressure.
When the relief valve is closed, system pressure is pushing upwards against the piston seat seal on an area equal to the inside diameter of the seat.

 Relief Valve Modeling Project
A Relief Valve is a device, usually appended in parallel in a circuit rather than in series, used to limit the fluid pressure in a hydraulic system to a preset maximum, known as the full-flow pressure.
The direct acting relief valve is simply a ball or a poppit and a heavy spring holding the poppit which blocks fluid flow.
Analysis consisted of changing the number of turns on the relief valve and observing the flow rate through the relief valve and the pressure to the relief valve (experienced at the input of the actuator).

 Pressure Relief / Sustaining Valve
It is a pilot controlled, hydraulically operated, diaphragm actuated globe valve in either the oblique (Y) or angle pattern design.
The lower control chamber is connected through a fixed orifice to the downstream pressure, which serves to cushion the closing of the valve.
This varies the pressure in the upper control chamber causing the main valve to throttle thus maintaining constant upstream pressure.

IDEX Corporation | Micropump | Tech Tips | Relief Valves & Fluid Bypass
The relief valve (also called a bypass valve) is a mechanism used to control or limit pressure by allowing the fluid to flow into an auxiliary passage, away from the main flow path.
Generally, the relief valve is used as a safety precaution, setting a limit for the maximum operating pressure of the system or pump, ready to operate should the system exceed its pressure limits.
Relief valves are available from several sources and typically operate on the same principle as explained previously, a poppet held in place with a spring is activated when the fluid pressure overcomes the force exerted by the spring.

 Safety Relief Valve Products
Valves are ideal for instrumentation panels, line blocks on cryogenic storage tanks, thermal relief or "Whistler valve" applications.
These valves are balanced against back pressure and chatter-free, with maximum overpressure of 10% and a fixed blowdown within 20%.
Atmospheric pressure, present at the valve inlet or outlet, depending on the application, provides the lift force required to open the main piston once the vacuum set point is reached.

There is nothing wrong with using the MAWP of the vessel to set the relief valve.
If we happen to be lucky enough to be able to go back to re-address the relief device specification after we get the vendor print for the vessel (which rarely happens fast enough during a plant design), we can re-specify the relief device for the true MAWP.
We must be carful when we talk about the relief valve passing the full capacity at the allowable over pressure.

Upon receipt of a valve, condition assessment and repair strategies are documented on the internal job traveler/test report, which is included in the valve’s permanent record.
Next, the valve is assembled and set to the required pressure, using the appropriate test medium, according to ASME Section I and Section VIII Div.
Valves are shipped to the customer along with an attached copy of the job traveler/test report.

 Relief Valve Set Pressure
Once the required relief valve orifice size is calculated, an actual orifice size equal to or greater than the calculated orifice size is chosen from a selection available from a particular manufacturer.
The certified capacity which determines adequacy of design of a relief valve (which is the 'device' I assume you are referring to since the capacity of a stand alone rupture disk is different) is based on the criteria described in ASME Section VIII, Divison 1, Paragraph UG-131, not Paragraph UG-125.
I see that the code states that "the valve must have the capacity to relieve the load*" and that "the official rated capacity is that which is stamped*" but I don't see where it says that the valve must be able to relieve the load at the official rated capacity.

Need to use Temperature Relief Valve   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Is there any "rule" about the need to have a temperature Relief valve on a pressure vessel whose inlet and outlet can be closed, when there is no risk of fire and the vessel contains only a gaseous mixture.
Relief devices (of which a relief valve is one such device) is used to protect against overpressure, not high temperature.
It is not uncommon not to have a credible scenario even though ASME makes you put a relief valve on a given vessel.

 Water Heater Pressure Relief Valve
If your TPR valve suddenly started leaking when it didn't use to, and you haven't had any plumbing renovation work done recently, this is the most likely cause.
It's not uncommon for older valves to get stuck in the open position when tested for the first time after many years - so be sure to know where the water shutoff valve for the inlet to the heater is. A phone number of a plumber is a good thing to have handy.
The backflow valve prevents this, so the extra water has no place to go and pressure builds in the tank until it exceeds the TPR valve set point (about 120 psi) and water comes out the TPR discharge tube.

Boiler relief valve or blow off valve
The boiler relief valve or the blow off valve is a safety valve that protects your heating system from building up to much pressure and possibly blowing up.
A boiler relief valve needs to be tested every three months to be sure it is operating properly.
A boiler relief or blow off valve, that has not been tested in a long time may become rusted closed, causing it to be as dangerous as not having one at all.

 Water Heater (Temperature/Pressure Relief Valve)
The purpose of the TPR valve is to provide an important safety mechanism that allows for the immediate discharge of excess temperature and pressure that builds up inside the tank as the water is heated.
While this occurrence is admittedly unlikely due to the fact that the TPR valve would have to fail (stay open) while a simultaneous drop in line pressure would create a siphon, the mechanical potential does exist for this contamination to occur.
When you consider that the TPR valve discharges at 150 psi, which is five times greater than the force of your garden hose, the scalding water can strike the bottom of the shallow pan and spray out in all directions.

Our continuous involvement with valve technology has resulted in the development of reliable analytical models, design improvements, and innovative solutions to persistent valve/actuator problems that have defied the industry for decades.
Analytical model predictions of the hydrodynamic torque of various butterfly valve discs (including the effect of upstream flow disturbances) were validated by scale model and full-scale valve testing.
The CFD model was used to calculate the flow-induced torque based on the check valve disc position and flow rate, as well as the oscillation in pressure force due to flow-induced disturbances of the upstream pump.
