RELIEF POINTS Relief wins plus saves minus losses was the original formula used as the basis for the Rolaids Company's annual award to the top reliever in each league.
SAVE Created by Jerome Holtzman of the Chicago Sun-Times, the save began to be reported by The Sporting News on a regular basis in 1960.
In 1973 the save was redefined so that a reliever had not only to finish the game but also to find the potential tying or winning run on base or at the plate, or, alternately, to pitch the final three innings of a victorious contest.

BS - Blown save - number of times entering the game in a save situation, and being charged the run which ties the game.

That his 310 saves are now 13th is a mark of how relief usage has changed, not a mark against Gossage's accomplishments.
His 223 career win shares are the third-highest total for a reliever, behind Wilhelm and Dennis Eckersley, and if you only count the years Eckersley pitched in relief, then Gossage rates as having had the second most valuable career by a reliever.
He led the league in saves four times, and his 3.03 career ERA was 32 percent better than league average over the course of his career.

The One About Win Probability -- The Hardball Times
Like Win Shares, WPA is not a good predictive statistic because it's not necessarily a good representation of a player's true talent.
The most interesting and useful application of Win Probability Added -- the one that Drinen, Tangotiger and others have spent a lot of time on -- is the evaluation of relief pitchers and the managers who call on them.
Win Shares, by the way, includes an approximation of WPA for relief pitchers, based on each pitcher's saves and holds.
