religion - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about religion
A common factor in religions is the ascription to the God or gods of an interest in the behaviour of humans and their judgement of it as right or wrong, although the standards of morality attributed to gods vary enormously.
Other related studies are the psychology of religion, which examines human states of mind under religious influence – for example, ecstasy, diabolic possession, and faith healing – and the possible causes of these states; and the philosophy of religion, which coincides to a large extent with natural theology.
Religion may originate in pondering the unknown; in the need to explain phenomena that are not understood; in awe of natural forces; in a psychological need for outside support; in dreams and visions; or in the veneration of ancestors or clan totems.

 God's Judgment on Heterosexuality a... - Crossroads of Religion - tribe.net
It was soon found that stricter regulation of heterosexual tendencies was required, and the catholic church, in its wisdom, determined within a few centuries of its institutional life that bishops (and in the West, all clergy) should permanently abstain from all heterosexual activity.
Similarly, heterosexual lobbyists have been hard at work mounting efforts to decriminalize heterosexual acts still forbidden by statute in many states, to lower the age of consent for sexual activity between persons of the opposite sex, and to legalize prostitution and the distribution of pornography.
Heterosexuals are also fervent in their efforts to retain the special rights that they have managed to secure, rights not afforded to other citizens.

It is the religion itself that must make a stand to not recognise this marriage on religious terms, but the church technically has no jurisdiction over a legal marriage - since marriages are considered legal even if they are not performed by the church.
Religion really is one of those things you can either have both feet in, or none at all, even if many (if not most) prefer to straddle both sides.

Religion and sexuality - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the religion's teachings, the prohibition against sex outside of marriage is largely related to the prescribed life stages Hindus are bound to follow if they are to attain moksha (the same as the Buddhist concept of nirvana, or enlightenment of the soul).
Neo-Pagan religions tend to be positive about sexuality, and are almost unanimous in their acceptance of same-sex relationships as equal to heterosexual ones.
Most Neo-Pagan religions have the theme of fertility (both physical and creative/spiritual) as central to their practices, and as such encourage a healthy sex life, which is seen as consensual sex between adults, regardless of gender or age.

The church must respond to the debates and challenges, and it takes place at a time that we've experienced 30 or 40 years of a sexual revolution in the larger society, and the church is trying to figure out how to respond to this crisis.
We say to the heterosexual person, there are certain behaviors that are inconsistent with the Christian ethic.
It seems to me the most natural analogy is not with alcoholism or with pedophilia, it is with heterosexuality, which is a neutral state of being, certain behaviors being acceptable and others not in the Christian ethic.

The truth is that mainstream religion has moved beyond animal sacrifice, slavery and the host of primitive rituals described in Leviticus centuries ago.
Future religious believers will be asking themselves why religion would not accept that the world was round, why religion was used to justify slavery, why religion was used to ban interracial relationships, and why the world's religions condemned homosexuals and homosexuality.
Religion always goes astray at the point it's practitioners begin to have so little faith in their god that they feel they must take God's matters into their own hands.

Heterosexuality, as it is defines in real terms, is "male-female bonding beyond any brief relationship, and sex beyond the natural act of procreation for recreational purposed".
Heterosexuality can not thus be natural, especially in the biological sense, since recreational intercourse would lead to procreation if the condom (or 'pill') was not utilized.
Heterosexuality as created by the religio-politician, as regards over-breeding, is a threat to all nature and ultimately ourselves.

The document states that feminism's apparent inability to acknowledge differences calls "into question the family, in its natural two-parent structure of mother and father, and makes homosexuality and heterosexuality virtually equivalent, in a new model of polymorphous sexuality".
Surely, and especially in a contemporary AIDS environment, any human state that promotes love - celibate, religious community, heterosexual or homosexual - is preferable to one that promotes intolerance or hatred, not to mention infidelity, unsafe sex or the civil and legal instability of family units.

MyDD :: Why Do Democrats Hate Religion?
Religious people pretend that their religion is under attack any time people who don't believe in their fairy tales don't want to live their lives by the faithful's standards.
This is the problem with many religious folks...whenever someone comes out and says they don't want religion to be the basis for laws in society, they have this knee-jerk reaction and pretend that someone just attacked their faith.
The plain and obvious fact is that whatever your private religion, supernatural beliefs or superstitions, it must all be left outside the entrance to the public square because any policies we adopt as a people can only be based on our common faith......our faith in reason.

My first and second conclusions are based upon an assumption that heterosexual transmission of HIV is augmented by several factors, including the necessity for homosexual men to mask their sexual orientation by having relationships with women.

Paul Lakeland, an expert on the Catholic Church, who is a professor at Fairfield University in Connecticut, expressed concern that some of the document could be used by church conservatives to condemn any form of advocacy for women.
