Topic: Religion in Israel

The Future Role of Religion in Israel
At the very least, Israel must produce an Orthodox rabbinate that is equipped to cope with the contemporary world, that is to say, rabbis who have a proper general as well as Jewish education and who know how to speak to the Israeli public.
In Israel, where the daily expressions of religion are in the hands of baalei-batim and the rabbinate does not play a clerical role in the Western sense, this is, for them, a great mistake.
What has been missing in Israel is a response on the part of the religious community to the current issues of Israel's foreign security and social agendas, out of their religious understanding.

Hebrew Religion - Israel's Contribution To Universal Religion
Religion has to do with the relation of God and man so that the character of any religion is determined by its conception of God, of man, and of their connection.
Leaders of thought in the present generation are at last apprehending the social message of the religion of Israel; but we listen long and hear faint echo in our generation of the higher truth of Hosea, Jeremiah, and the Suffering Servant, or of the hope of the fulfilment of life in the hereafter.
Such were some aspects of Israel's conception of God and man which make her writings an ever-new revelation of the nature of God and of the possible destiny of man; but high and true conceptions of God and man do not of themselves make a religion, for religion involves conscious relation between God and man.

In response to this ruling, Israel’s government, which at the time was supported by a coalition which included religious parties, advanced an amendment to the Municipalities Ordinances, which in fact reversed the court's decision and allowed the municipalities to forbid businesses' opening on the Sabbath.

Israel, Religion Of, 1 - International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
This religion was not of a strictly uniform nature, but is characterized by a development and a growth, and in the centuries which are covered by the Old Testament books it has passed through many changes.
One of the recent results of the science of the history of religion is the knowledge that the religion of Israel itself, and not merely the corruptions of this religion, stood in a much closer connection with other religions than had in former times been supposed.
Israel claims that its existence as a nation and its special relation to Yahweh begins with its exodus from Egypt and with the conclusion of the covenant at Mt. Sinai (compare Amos 3:2; 9:7).

 Minorities in Israel
Israel's declaration of independence guarantees that the government will "uphold the full social and political equality of all its citizens without distinction of race, creed and sex." Approximately 20 percent of Israel's population, about one million people, are not Jewish, comprising primarily Arabic-speaking groups.
The Druze religion is not accessible to outsiders and Druze constitute a separate cultural, social and religious Arabic-speaking community.
At the time, however, Israel was still in a state of war and threatened by its Arab neighbors and it viewed the Arab population within its borders as a security threat.

This was a year in which the sun set on the "religion of Palestinianism" in the world consciousness upon the death of its high priest.
Therefore, as long as the Palestinians speak about "justice", it means they continue to refuse to critically examine their religion even after the death of the high priest, and there is no place for Israel and its current residents.
All that is left for Israel opposite the Palestinians are unilateral measures, to distance itself and to protect itself from them and the religion of revolt they have created.

Religion in Israel: A Consensus for Jewish Tradition
In fact, Israel is hardly monolithic in any respect and enjoys a deeply rooted religious pluralism that must be recognized for what it is. Israel is a country with at least half a dozen different recognized religio-ethnic communities which in the Middle East are the primary manifestations of pluralism.
Israel's Sephardim, many of whom are traditional, moderate, and more accepting of the contemporary world than the more militant Ashkenazi Orthodox, are not concerned with either of those issues.
In Israel's part of the world, what counts are critical behavioral acts such as birth, marriage, and burial rites, and not necessarily for reasons of belief.

In the prestate period, the civil religion of Jewish society was generally socialist, that is, Labor Zionism.
Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s--roughly the period of Ben-Gurion's preeminence--a civil religion was fashioned by some factions of the political elite (led by Ben-Gurion himself), which sought to stress the new Israeli state as the object of ultimate value.
This new right-wing civil religion affirmed traditional Judaism and denigrated modernistic secularism--the reverse of the earlier civil religion.

Israel is special, if not sacred, to more faiths than is any other country in the world.
Today for at least 15 different Jewish sects, several Christian sects, Muslims, Druze, Baha'is, Samaritans, Circassians, Karaites, Bedouins, and still others, Israel is holy, and although many of the groups claim the land as "their own," the differing faiths are practiced side by side.
Christians traveling in Israel are often perplexed by certain Israeli Christian customs--entrance fees at holy shrines, or famous churches subdivided (with actual lines of demarcation on walls and floors) among different sects of Christianity.
