20th WCP: Mission in Modern Life: A Public Role for Religious Beliefs
The beliefs appealed to may be deemed either secular or religious; but what matters here, in spite of the declarations of Gramsci and others, is that religious beliefs can and do motivate missions aimed at advancing the public good.
Seemingly secular missions were of course undertaken on the basis of religious beliefs throughout the history of Western civilization, long before anyone thought of toleration, or keeping politics out of the pulpit, or, for that matter, of ideology.
Religious beliefs available in the Judaeo-Christian catalog sufficed to stimulate an eventually successful abolitionist movement in the United States, then movements to extend suffrage to women, then to contain corporate greed and environmental degradation.

Religious Diversity (Pluralism) (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
Someone is a religious non-exclusivist with respect to a given issue when she denies that the religious perspective of any basic theistic system or variant thereof is superior to all other religious perspectives on this issue.
And someone is a religious pluralist with respect to a given issue when she claims not only (as a non-exclusivist) that no specific religious perspective is superior but also makes the positive claim that the religious perspectives of more than one basic theistic system or variant thereof are equally close to the truth.
However, he argues, since belief assessment only makes sense when one isn't certain that the belief in question is true, and since rock bottom religious beliefs are among the foundational truths — the basic, assumed truths — in an exclusivist's epistemic system, no assessment is necessary.

Mano Singham's Web Journal: The religious beliefs of scientists-1
In the first case, I discussed in an earlier posting that all that being a scientist committed one to was methodological naturalism, while denying the existence of god required a commitment to philosophical naturalism as well.
He found the rate of "disbelief or doubt in the existence of God" to be higher that that of the general scientist population, being 70% in 1914 and as much as 85% in 1934.
For clerics, belief in religion is central and denying god would be going completely counter to a fundamental element of their community.

Strong Religious Views Decrease Teens' Likelihood of Having Sex Teens' Attitudes Towards Sex Hold More Sway ...
Teens-particularly girls-with strong religious views are less likely to have sex than are less religious teens, largely because their religious views lead them to view the consequences of having sex negatively.
While previous research has examined religious and sexual beliefs, and how they relate to sexual activity, most previous research was unable to distinguish the effects of religious attitudes and practices on sexual activity from the effects of sexual activity on religious attitudes and practices.
The researchers asked the teenagers about their participation in religious activities and the importance of religion in their lives, their beliefs about how having sex would affect them and people close to them, and whether they were in a dating relationship.
