Religious studies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Religious studies is the designation commonly used in the English-speaking world for a multi-disciplinary, secular study of religion that dates to the late 19th century in Europe (and the influential early work of such scholars as Friedrich Max Müller, in England, and Cornelius P. Tiele, in the Netherlands), but is practiced today by scholars worldwide.
Emile Durkheim was the forefather of the sociological study of religion.
Functionalism, in regard to religious studies, is the analysis of religions and their various communities of adherents using the functions of particular religious phenomena to interpret the structure of religious communities and their beliefs.

Since the study of religion touches many different disciplinary areas, religious studies are a useful preparation and intrinsic component of any liberal or professional education.

Religious studies credited with at least presenting the worshiper's point of view is one step beyond religious studies restricted to a mere subject area, but here too religious studies constitutes less than a discipline and is permitted to take no stand on the actual origin, function, and meaning of religion.
