Topic: Remains (Only Ones album)

In the News (Thu 24 Dec 09)

The Remains - New England Music Scrapbook
Barry and the Remains, in a way, was a folk-rock band, drawing much inspiration particularly from the electric-blues masters; and they were not without their ties to the great Harvard Square folk community.
Band members have long said that these are the only recordings that come close to reflecting the energy and excitement of their live shows.
The Remains really liked to interact with their audience; but at many concerts on the Beatles tour--such as the Dodger Stadium show and especially the final concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco--they were isolated from crowds that were a considerable distance away.

Unfortunately, the end of the album seemed redundant to me and that hidden surprise was useless since it's lightly used.
Even though this album is a major difference compared to the others, it keeps the typically Opeth, and famous, sound and feeling.
Only the general visual feeling remains from one album's cover picture to the next.

 Filmtracks: Braveheart (James Horner)
The newly arrived fans of the film itself are the ones making this score a juggernaut, which begs some speculation about what they'll think of it when they eventually, perhaps, discovered that it's not a really original work.
Only seven minutes of previously unreleased Horner music is presented unimpeded by dialogue from the film, and while these seven minutes are pleasant enough, they don't feature a blockbuster cue to get all excited about.
Instead, the album relies on scenes taken directly from the film, sound effects and all, so that the album is a sort of audio souvenir from the motion picture.

I bought this album a couple of months ago and at first i found it to be rather generic so after a few listens i shelved it.
Sepultura had also relesed some minor label albums in the ealy to mid 80's but it was Beneath the Remains (89) which confirmed their status in terms of classic thrash albums.
Well, it remains their fastest and heaviest work and is probably the closest thrash came to touching on the ferocity of its close cousin death metal.

All the lyrics for the new album were written by Dave, except the song "Black Magick Curse" (Tony Lazaro- guitars, wrote those lyrics) before Thorns joined the band.
The only lyrics that Thorns wrote were the ones from the track "The Night has a Thousand Eyes".
This key goes well with the entire concept of the album as the dead will al join together and join the apocalyptic destruction of all that is holy on this earth.

 Remains-The Only Ones
Largely ignored by both fans and critics, “Remains,” the band’s quietly released (French-only) posthumous demos collection, is dismissed as a mere odds and ends afterthought, and is rarely if ever regarded as part of the core Only Ones oeuvre.
Missing on Remains are the ultimately humorous lyrical histrionics that kept listeners ever-guessing Perrett’s true intent.
The original album came with a bonus EP, three of whose compositions survived the transition to the CD format, "Don’t Hold Your Breath,” “I Only Wanna Be Your Friend,” and the early-era rocker, “Oh No.” The fourth track, “Broken Arrows,” harkens back to the pre-Only Ones England’s Glory, and is available on that CD re-issue.

Pitchfork Feature: Top 50 Albums of 2006
The album was recorded in Edward Droste's mother's Cape Cod home, and that familial, clean sheets, cookies-baking warmth is weirdly palpable: Yellow House is cozy, nuanced, and lovingly produced, as delicate as a fistful of dried flowers.
The result is an album cut with dark, devastating simplicity, colored by ritualistic percussion, translucent guitar figures, and Angus Andrew's unearthly falsetto, which hovers like a phantom.
The only way to accurately depict these interactions was to reach back to an era of bigger rock sounds-- not just Bruuuuce, but also Thin Lizzy and the Band-- that do the alchemy of making the everyday seem momentous.

Admittedly, when I bought this album I already owned every song on it, so it's nothing new to me. However, for those of you that are beginning Trio fans or only own the main albums, this is a great addition to your library.
However, this album is (of course) a must-own for any big Trio fan, and even for those that are only mildly interested in the trio, I would suggest putting this on your list, because there's no such thing as a bad Alkaline Trio purchase.
fyi the album cover is of someone in a apron with a glove on and a small knife in his hand three things commonly asociated with a butcher or abitoir worker.

His fifth album and best work since Last Great Challenge in a Dull World, Closed Circuit brings it all full circle, a continuation of "one man vs. the world." The album cover is as blue as the mood of the album, though there's many tornadic pop nuggets to pull you out of the mire.
That isn't to say that it's a bad album; in fact, it's a brilliant album of songs centered around his favored themes of desolation, paranoia, and confessional blueness.
Substatic is made up of only five songs ranging from 4 to 16 minutes, but they're all highly charged, mostly toward the negative end of the emotional spectrum.

Confronting the AIDS pandemic in 1990 with Plague Mass, Galás asked us, “Were You a Witness?” The question remains, and it isn’t just rhetorical; it’s a direct challenge to the collusion of silence and passivity within each of us as yet another pogrom is played out and marched through the media for mass consumption.
We need look only as far as the continued struggle for a Palestinian state, the internment of Afghan rebels at Camp X-ray in Guantánamo Bay, and the recent routing and systematic plundering of Iraq to grasp the relevance of Defixiones.

On their third effort, the group has woven together the disparate personalities and influences of its five members to create an album that moves from trip-hop balladry to guitar-crunching hard rock to Pink Floyd-esque sprawling arrangements.

 The Unreleased Album
There is another first album, and, in one of those strange occurences designed to drive discographers crazy, it was called "Sheryl Crow".
The Sheryl Crow album was slated to be released on September 22, 1992, and a press folder (with a photo and a press release) was prepared, in anticipation of releasing the tape for general DJ distribution, as a promo, so that the LP could receive radio play.
It does, though, state that the album was recorded in 1990 (wrong), and implies that LLV is a studio cut (false advertising being a long standing tradition amongst bootleggers and pirates).
