Remington Rand became the leading (and for a brief time, the only) computer vendor in the world through its acquisitions of the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation (EMCC) in February 1950 and Engineering Research Associates (ERA) in December 1951.
At the time of its acquisition by Remington Rand, ERA was working on a successor to the 1101, which had been called the ERA 1103, and it was later referred to as the UNIVAC Scientific Computer or the UNIVAC 1103.
James Rand came in late in the presentation and apparently was taken with the idea that the 1103 was a worthy rival to the 701.

Unfortunately for Remington Rand, no legal loophole could be found to force the Census Bureau to renegotiate the contract, and after being threatened with legal action if the terms were not met, they had no choice to continue the development of UNIVAC for the government at the original price.
Though Remington Rand took an economic beating for backing the two naive innovators, they secured for themselves a place in history as the producers of the first commercial computer system.

The invention of the Noiseless is attributed to C.C. Colby, N.H. Anderson, and the prolific Kidder.
Remington called it the "desk model," and said it was for "the typewriter user for whom a portable is too small and a large machine too expensive." But it is still light enough to be carried, and comes in a case with handle.
Remington documents call it the "noisy noiseless." Even though it looks very much like a noiseless machine, it doesn't have the small weights that press the noiseless typebars against the platen, and the typebars are allowed to hit the platen with enough force that they make a clackety-clack.

 Ayn Rand Biographical FAQ
Ayn Rand was a twentieth-century novelist and philosopher.
Rand supported the existence of patents and copyrights, sometimes referred to more generally as "intellectual property," similar to the ones that exist under US law today (which is not to claim that she would necessarily agree with every aspect of current US law on these subjects).
Rand strongly disapproved of anarchism and in her later years appears to have associated that ideology with the term 'libertarian.' This association is further reaffirmed by the comments of Harry Binswanger in an article published a few months before Rand's death, in which he repeatedly refers to "'libertarian' anarchists."[*]

It was the beginning of the end for Remington Rand, where quarrels between Bill Norris in the St. Paul (Minnesota) office, Eckert in the Philadelphia office, and the New York headquarters were starting to divide loyalties.
Since Remington Rand had bought out Eckert and Mauchly's patent rights for a pittance, IBM had been paying patent royalties to Remington as its computer sales took off.
But the Remington lawyers claimed that IBM's payments were not royalties, but rather damages resulting from Remington's earlier patent suit against IBM, before the cross-licensing had been worked out.

BTW for a little bit of history, Remington Rand had a few teething problems regarding QC at the start of their production.
In the spring of 1943 they shut down completely to get their act together, and when they resumed production a month or so later they began the S/N with NO (two large letters), as opposed to the earlier guns with No (underlined o).
The reason for this is the fact that Singer's machinery was handed over to Remington Rand once the war broke out (Singer chose to accept a contract to manufacture fire control directors (instead of more M1911A1s) during WW2).
