Remington Steele - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Remington Steele was an American television series first broadcast on the NBC network from 1982 to 1987.
In the show's pilot episode (which was actually the second episode broadcast), Laura reveals that she took the name "Remington" from a brand of typewriter and "Steele" from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
One running joke throughout the series was "Steele's" penchant for quoting lines from famous movies as ersatz bits of philosophy, and occasionally using techniques from cinematic mysteries to attempt to solve crimes, with variable degrees of success.

In the first episode, she is hired to help track down a thief, played by Pierce Brosnan (additional info and facts about Pierce Brosnan), who takes on the Remington Steele persona at the end of the show.
NBC, who still had Brosnan under contract, chose to renew Remington Steele for another year in order to capitalize on Brosnan becoming the new James Bond; this backfired, and Brosnan subsequently lost the role to Timothy Dalton (additional info and facts about Timothy Dalton), though he would finally become 007 in 1995.

In its first season, Remington Steele is a highly enjoyable romp--at the time of its debut a rather daring throwback to the film comedy/mysteries of the 30s and 40s (though in its own quiet way it made a point about the continuing disparity in male/female equality in business).
The hook of the first season in particular is Steele's love for classic movies (which was bound to make the series a hit with film fans), which allowed the writers to borrow rather liberally from classic films--a ploy that near the end of the season veers a bit too close to laziness on their part.
In one of the season's funniest episodes, "Steele Eligible," a magazine votes Steele one of the most eligible bachelors in the city: a title which leaves the would-be detective overjoyed until all the other bachelors on the list are murdered one by one.

It agrees with "Red Holt Steele", in which the goons at Varicorp say she has been employed with Remington Steele Investigations for the last 3.5 years, which means for 2.5 years there was no real Remington Steele in the picture.

DVD Verdict Review - Remington Steele: The Complete First Season
The featurette reiterates the roots of Remington Steele in the caper comedies of the 1940s and that Brosnan, as a rabid fan of the oldies, was perfectly suited for and enthusiastic in jabbering on about Humphrey Bogart, The Thin Man, and all manner of cinematic lore as Steele.
"Remington Steele: Season One," on side B of disc one, revealed more of how Butler and Gleason generated the finished product, going from the original Laura-only premise to Gleason's epiphanic "wouldn't it be great if he showed up and made her crazy?" idea.
Unfortunately for Remington Steele, catering to half of half the population (working age women) was not particularly inspired, and the show's quirky, farcical charm wore even on the demographic it was intended to impress.

Steele was subsequently hit with another bit of amnesia, awakening in a hotel room with no memory of the past two days to learn that he had apparently gambled away the agency ("Forged Steele").

Remington Steele has become best known as Brosnan's launching pad (he later become James Bond in GoldenEye and its sequels), but Zimbalist was every bit as crucial to the show's success; her mixture of glamor and toughness gives the show a distinctly adult sexiness and grounds Brosnan's boyish charm.

In the annals of TV and movie trivia, "Remington Steele" is famously responsible for postponing Brosnan stepping into the 007 tuxedo — as the show was getting low ratings, NBC announced it would be canceled at the end of its fourth season, and Brosnan accepted the offer to play Bond in The Living Daylights.
But the announcement sent viewers scurrying to their TVs and ratings for "Steele" skyrocketed — so NBC rescinded the cancellation and held Brosnan to his contract, forcing him to back out of the deal.

Off-hand charm and self-deprecating comic timing were two of the qualities this dashing Irish-born leading man brought to his winning portrayal of the sophisticated, often inept, con man/private investigator Remington Steele on the long-running TV series (NBC, 1982-87) of the same name.
At the last moment, the canceled Remington Steele was renewed, and Pierce Brosnan was contractually obligated to remain with the program, forcing him to relinquish the James Bond role to the less suitable Timothy Dalton.
It later became evident that the renewal of Steele was something of a subterfuge by its producers to keep Pierce Brosnan on their leash.
