 InternetEd Reviews: Mastodon- Remission
Album closer, “Elephant Man” is a softer song with a slow rhythm that somehow manages to preserve Remission’s elephantine sound.
Technical metal addicts (as well as fans of Relapse labelmates High On Fire) will find Mastodon’s Remission to be a diamond in the rough, provided they don’t mind the almost non-existent vocals.
Just from looking at the bizarre image of a horse bursting into flames on the album cover, it is clear that Mastodon is anything but a generic metal band.

Creative Loafing Atlanta VIBES BACK ON A REMISSION
For Mastodon's new Relapse Records CD, Remission -- the band's first full-length, after a Relapse EP and a Reptilian Records picture-disc single -- Mastodon took 10 days to meticulously record 11 tracks.
"I listen to our album and I'm not angry when it's over," Sanders says.
I've been taken on an emotional roller coaster touring with this band and that translated recording this album, and I've always enjoyed getting that same feeling from listening to the albums of bands I love."

Absolut Metal - album review - Mastodon - Remission
This is only Mastodon's first full length album and they are already putting other bands to shame.
These guys go from straight ahead sheer metal intensity, (ala Lamb Of God) to stoner rock heaven seemlessly while occasionally throwing in something pretty you might expect to hear on an Opeth album.

 Mastodon - Remission - review @ Tartareandesire.com
Releasing the demo “Lifesblood” in 2000 from Relapse records, the albumRemission” is the bands first full studio album but don’t let that fool you into thinking that this band is lacking experience.
With complex song structures throughout the album a feeling of anticipation overwhelms as you wait for the next verse or riff to strike and there is no telling where it is coming from or where it is going to.
Truthfully I feel that every range of metal is covered on this album.

Musician Forums - (Metal) Mastodon - Remission
They went on to release their first album; "Remission" in 2002, which got excellent reviews.
Some websites, such as allmusic.com have said that Mastodon's sound is "reminiscent of non death metal excursions by Entombed." The album also has a big southern sound all throughout it.
An absolutely perfect way to close the album, this track conveys most of the moods that were presented during the majority of the album.

 Mastodon Remission Relapse 2002
The execution of all of these styles and the way they bring them together is truly what makes Remission such a great album.
The sticking point of the album would be the vocals, which aren't bad or anything, they just seem to get lost in the shuffle.
This album is focused on the guitar and percussion work, so the vocals tend to get drowned out by the instruments.

Metal Refuge Review: MastodonRemission (reissue with bonus live DVD)
Now we have a wonderful ‘Unsane’ greatest hits compilation with a bonus DVD, a forthcoming reissue of the Dillinger Escape Plan’s masterwork ‘Calculating Infinity’ and here the deluxe reissue of Mastodon’s smash ‘Remission’.
Reviewing this album so far after the fact almost seems redundant, it is brilliant and quite probably THE album of 2002.
If you haven't already bought this album, the reissue is a no-brainer.

 Punknews.org Mastodon - Remission
This album is really really awesome, but live they did nothing for me. I dunno, they played well, but it was just kinda boring or something.
They use their songwriting skills to construct what ends up being an epic album; I’m sure that sounds cliché, but give this a listen and then see if you disagree.
Is this an album or a Dungeons and Dragons rules book?

 Amazon.com: Music: Remission
You can really hear the combination of technicality, brutality, fluidity, amazing drumming, and amazing guitar playing achieved on Death albums such as Human, Individual Thought Patterns, and The Sound of Perserverance on Mastodon's Remission and Lifeblood.
It's got everything from angry shouting vocals, loud crushing guitar riffs, pummeling bass lines, and very intense drumming, I mean it sounds a lot like doom metal to me. The album kicks off with two very intense numbers "Crusher Destroyer" and "March Of The Fire Ants" which show the band's tight muscianship.
I would have given it 5 stars had I written this review Before hearing "Leviathan," but that album is so much better sounding that by contrast, this is four stars.

Musically now, Leviathan, is the next step from Remission but this time the influences of the the band, like Rush and Megadeth, are shown in further level.
Mastodon with their debut album "Remission" had made many fans of heavy music to worship them.
"Leviathan" is the title of Mastodon's new album and the only thing that I can remember is that I had lost my afternoon listening to the promotional copy up to ten times only to have a final view for the album.

Mastodon: Leviathan - PopMatters Music Review
Mastodon's 2002 album Remission was the kind of debut release that every band dreams of pulling off, one that grabbed people's attention immediately, one that, upon hearing the first few bars of the first track, showed the world that they actually had something new to offer.
Well, Mastodon have indeed decided to change things considerably on their second album, Leviathan, and that change is not only for the better, but positively thrilling.
Living up to their moniker, Mastodon sounded massive, beastly, downright unstoppable, as the Atlanta, Georgia quartet combined the Southern-fried heavy rock of Clutch and Eyehategod with the technical proficiency and hardcore elements of The Dillinger Escape Plan.

I always wondered why the band would name itself Mastodon but perhaps it is because there music is as large and monstrous as the large extinct mammal the name is derived from.
The only other band that induces that feeling in me is a Swedish metal act by the name of Opeth, obviously the two bands are very different musically and conceptually but this certainly says something about the musicianship involved in this act.

Upon my first listen of Mastodon’s latest album, “Remission”, I was impressed not only by their performance, but also by the depth of the music.
The band will start off with their no nonsense style and go off into a frenzy, but then all of the sudden around the middle of the album they’ll drop into more melodic, calmer song.
Mastodon makes the way back into the dense dual-guitar harmony again before reminding you that the other band members are fully intact.

The band’s press and television profiles both continued to grow immensely upon the album’s release and MASTODON was invited to tour Europe with SLIPKNOT and SLAYER.
Songs such as the galloping "March of the Fire Ants," the beautiful "Ol’e Nessie," "Mother Puncher’s" labyrinthine guitar workout, and the punishing "Workhorse" are nothing short of insta-classics, and the album's remaining seven tracks are not far behind.

 Mastodon: Leviathan: Pitchfork Review
Marking a stark contrast with Remission, "Hearts Alive" continues Mastodon's revisitation of the new wave of British heavy metal-- and homage to the mysticism of the Viking Metal movement-- by unleashing a sweeping 13-minute epic, briefly featuring some of their most gentle vocals to date.
What's most impressive about this album is evidenced here: Mastodon have learned how to flaunt their musicianship and still allow a song to evolve.
With their 2004 beast, the aptly titled Leviathan, Mastodon finally find their niche as a thinking man's metal band.
