Remonstrant Brotherhood - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Remonstrant Brotherhood is a religious society in the netherlands.
It has it's origins in the dissidence of Jacobus Arminius and the signing of the 'Remonstrance' against strict calvinism by 44 ministers.
Today, the Remonstrance Brotherhood is a small organisation of 43 congregations.

Remonstrants are by no means always in agreement with one another on questions of faith and social issues.
In the Remonstrant congregations the Lord's Supper is celebrated several times a year: the sharing of bread and wine, the celebration of the community of faith and as a remembrance of the life, death and resurrection of Christ.
Remonstrants owe their name to a document drawn up in 1610, the 'Remonstrance', a defence and testimonial in which 44 ministers set out their views on how belief in the sovereignty of God could be reconciled with human responsibility and free will.

According to Remonstrant theology, marriage is not a sacrament, nor is it indissoluble.
First, whereas the Remonstrants are an almost exclusively Dutch church (there is a small congregation in Friedrichstadt an der Eider), the Lutherans are part of the large Lutheran church family, and thus this decision has a symbolic importance beyond the Dutch borders.
In 1986, the Remonstrants were very cautious to avoid a ‘resacralisation’ of marriage, and emphasised that their decision did not imply that people living alone or in different relationships have a less-fulfilling life.

Johannes Bredenburg   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In these pamphlets, he was mainly concerned to demonstrate that the Remonstrant church had forfeited its right to represent the Arminian heritage.
These early texts are particularly interesting in that they reveal both Bredenburg’s admiration for the Remonstrant theologian Simon Episcopius and his fascination with the philosophy of René Descartes: he praises Isaac d’Huisseau’s La Reünion du christianisme (1670), which put forward the proposal to use the Cartesian methodology to reduce Christianity to its dogmatic essentials.
To Bredenburg’s mind, this suggestion could be of major importance in the effort to unite Christianity and to restore the Church of Christ to its original purity.

Also the Remonstrants used the term -original sin-, but they did not consider this to be sin in the proper sense of the word, not as guilt which is punishable in God's eyes.
