Remote concentrator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In modern telephony a remote concentrator is the lowest level in the telephone switch hierarchy.
The interface between remote concentrators and their parent telephone switches has been standardised by ETSI as the V5 protocol.
The trick is that after the central switch tells the concentrator which time slot to use, the concentrator "opens" a time-slot on the loop to a local phone.

Multidrop data concentrator communication network - Patent 4726017
When a remote port is polled for a data reply, it proceeds to transmit a response to equipment at the master site that had previously included a request for data in a message to a device couped to that port.
Before describing, in detail, the particular improved multidrop concentrator communication scheme in accordance with the present invention, it should be observed that the present invention resides primarily in a novel structural combination of conventional communication and data/signal processing circuits and not in the particular detailed configurations thereof.
Since the concentrators do not convert the protocol of messages coupled to their ports to a different protocol for transmission, but rather simply envelope the data which is queued in memory as received from an associated terminal, interfacing circuitry is less complicated and thereby more reliable.

Concentrator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In data transmission, a functional unit that permits a common path to handle more data sources than there are channels currently available within the path.
A concentrator usually provides communication capability between many low-speed, usually asynchronous channels and one or more high-speed, usually synchronous channels.
ISP usually use concentrators to enable modem dialing, this kind of concentrator is sometimes called a modem concentrator or a remote access concentrator.

Computer controlled telephone answering system - Patent 3987252
Each remote site also has a special purpose digital control unit to control and verify the operation of the analog switching matrices, a digital memory to hold temporarily command messages for forwarding to the central site of the answering service, and a digital logic for ring detection, switch control and message verification.
Within each remote site unit there is a control unit and an analog switching matrix or trunk concentrator in which these 1,024 trunk lines 30 are concentrated by the remote site concentrator 32, as hereinafter described, down to 16 or less trunk lines 34 which lead to a telephone answering service central site 36.
At this point, the ring is indicated to the remote site control unit buffer memory 98 which retrieves a word with answer instructions from its memory, increments a bit to count the rings, and compares the results to the predetermined number of rings required for answering the line.

If all 26 remote users connect at the same time and decide to download a large file, their actions could conceivably slow down connections between the headquarters and sites B and C. The bandwidth management feature could be enabled on the Concentrator to distribute the bandwidth more equitably.
If a remote user is not a member of a predefined group, he or she can transmit data up to the system-wide policing rate.
If a remote user belongs to a group that is not specifically defined a policing rate, that person is assigned the policing rate defined for the interface.

In the initial RAO Letter 21, the Division stated that the primary factor distinguishing a remote concentrator terminal from a remote switch was that a remote switch has stand-alone switching capability while a concentrator does not have that capability.
We recognize that both concentrators and remote switches often provide similar functions and that this may cause confusion in determining to which accounts the equipment should be assigned.
Virtually all remote units that contain a switching matrix routinely perform the interconnection function locally and rely on the host unit for the control function, except in the event of an emergency, when the control function is also transferred to the remote.

 ACU2000 Alarm Concentrator
ACU2000 units can also be used to remotely control each other by for example the alarm input on one unit activating a relay on a remote unit over an ethernet LAN.
Remote alarm indications can activate a local or remote relay action or can initiate an email message or a short message to either a pager, SMS cellphone or other mobile communications device.
The ACU2000 Alarm Concentrator can be interfaced directly via RS232 to any of the other Selective Communications wireless data products such as Mobile Data Terminals and Paging Data Terminals.

Remote access is a general term used to describe the market for hardware that allows remote users to connect to computers.
Gartner Group consultancy predicts that there will be nearly 60 million users of remote access technology by the year 2000, with the figure doubling two years later.
The company is offering up new modules for the CyberSwitch remote access platform that support digital modems and shoring up its low end with a new box called the 5500, which supports up to 120 simultaneous remote users.

 Define AC - Access Concentrator
Meaning of AC — “Access Concentrator”, is a remote access device that efficiently forwards data, allowing multiple calls to come in over one port from the telephone company, resulting in higher call densities than remote access servers.
The access concentrator is able to forward traffic based on PPP session information as well as IP addresses.

The configuration of PPTP and L2TP remote access is much simpler than that of IPsec, even if you'll be using L2TP over IPsec; this is because if you're using IPsec with Cisco remote access clients, you have many more IKE Mode Config features than what L2TP over IPsec clients support.

The LAN hubs are used at the switching center and remote concentrator sites to connect together the switching server/PCs and the control, message correction, archiving, and monitoring terminals.
The IEEE 802.11b protocol also provides a means to connect, to any remote concentrator or the switching center itself, any building complexes within a radius of 6 miles.
This 'concentration ratio' of 2 to 1 is very conservative, and a ratio of 5 to 1 has been tested with only moderate message delays introduced by call set-up delays.

Digital Loop Carriers (DLCs) in remote cabinets serve millions of customers in North America — depending on the territory, from 15 percent to 40 percent of lines — and are projected to serve as much as 53 percent in some regions by 2003.
Copper Mountain's CopperEdge 200 RT is supposed to move all the functionality of the CopperEdge 200 to the end of the digital loop, extending the DSL feature set to business and residential customers who previously could not receive full DSL service because of their distance from COs.
Copper Mountain claims that its NEBS 3-compliant CopperEdge 200 RT DSL Concentrator is being optimized not only for the physical challenges of the remote environment — which include extreme temperature and humidity fluctuations, high levels of airborne contaminants, and space limitations — but also for operational challenges such as high density under restrictive power budgets.

3Com Pushes RAS to the Edge - integrated NT server into Total Control Remote Access Concentrator - Product Announcement ...
Corporations with large telecommuting employee populations have a problem: Every single remote access session adds to the amount of traffic running across their LANs, and requires extra CPU cycles from already overtaxed network servers.
Managing remote access solutions, which may comprise heterogeneous components from various vendors, becomes a growing problem as well.
By integrating a remote access concentrator together with a Windows NT server, 3Com enables administrators to insert an extra tier into the network hierarchy, on which frequently accessed data and applications can be placed.
