Remote imaging protocol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Remote Imaging Protocol (RIP), also referred to as RIPscrip (and frequently, yet incorrectly as RIPscript), was an early vector graphics protocol, created by Jeff Reeder, a founder of TeleGrafix Communications.
RIP was designed as a method of transferring graphic imagery between two modem users, primarily to enhance the aesthetic experience of a BBS (Bulletin Board System).
RIP, however, failed to catch on, and was soon forgotten as the online community made the wholesale migration from BBS systems to the Internet and World Wide Web with its improved (and more cross-platform) graphic capabilities.

Colorado River Delta | remote sensing
Remote sensing should be among methods of choice for monitoring riparian zones, since these corridors stretch over thousands of kilometers, cross national borders and are difficult to survey on the ground (Nagler et al., 2001, in press).
Remote sensing methods for estimating plant cover have largely replaced manual methods of determining vegetation percent cover (including other factors such as plant type, height, and density), but this conversion of methods has primarily been for non-riparian biomes, such as grasslands, coniferous and deciduous forests, and agricultural settings.
Although remote sensing provides consistent, large-area coverage of riparian regions, which are difficult to access by land due to a lack of roads, Huete et al.

A later method of transmitting graphics over a BBS was developed called Remote Imaging Protocol or RIP, which required special software on both the BBS and the terminal end.
RIP was still basically text, but the text referred to the positions of lines, curves, fills, and other steps in drawing graphics on an EGA display of 640x350x16 colors.
While RIP never caught on in the BBS world, the art scene embraced it as a form of expression, if not a viable method of displaying art on a BBS.

RIP stands for "Remote Imaging Protocol" and was invented by Jeff Reeder of Telegrafix, Inc.
RIP made it easy to display rudimentary images quickly over connections as slow as 2400 baud.
RIP scenes were created using a program called RIPaint, made by Telegrafix.

Satellite remote sensing can be traced to the early days of the space age (both Russian and American programs) and actually began as a dual approach to imaging surfaces using several types of sensors from spacecraft.
Most remote sensing instruments on aircraft or space-based platforms operate in one or more of these windows by making their measurements with detectors tuned to specific frequencies (wavelengths) that pass through the atmosphere.
A primary use of remote sensing data is in classifying the myriad features in a scene (usually presented as an image) into meaningful categories or classes.

Embedding with GNU: the gdb Remote Serial Protocol
I discussed how its remote debugging feature could be used to debug code running in an embedded system connected to a PC by a serial cable, network connection, or some other means.
I also mentioned in that article that, to make remote debugging possible, gdb requires the services of a debugging stub-a small library of code in the debugging target that manages registers and memory, responds to breakpoints, and reports application status to gdb via the communications link.
The GDB Remote Serial Protocol (RSP) is a simple, ASCII message-based protocol suitable for use on serial lines, local area networks, or just about any other communications medium that can support at least half-duplex data exchange.

The protocol for RV exists to validate the process not for the viewer but for others, as well as to help enable it--primarily by preventing a legion of problems that can't occur if it's followed.
A viewer might forego official protocol by getting 'extra' feedback because at that moment their 'internal process' having feedback was more important to them.

Unfortunately, due to the hideously proprietary nature in which their protocol was written, it failed miserably and was not accepted by the masses as they had originally planned.

Unlike most of the art you see on web pages and such, RIP is vector based, meaning that you see images being drawn in real time, calculating geometric shapes, lines, fills and such rather than a simple straight down binary copy in pixel maps.
