In fact, the first three finishers dipped under the old world record with the Netherlands’ Renate Groenewold taking second in 3:58.94 while Canada’s Cindy Klassen secured the bronze in 3:58.97.
Pechstein then had to watch nervously while Groenewold, skating in the final pair, entered the last lap trailing the new world record by just three-hundreths of a second.

God he will miss her :tape: (sorry, know it's not entirely fair but I always get the impression 75% of his time is spent on Renate, 20% on Jochem Uytdehaage and 5% on the rest of his skaters :rolleyes:)

Gretha Smit, who was paired with Hughes, led the Netherlands led to a 1-2 finish in the women’s 5,000 with Renate Groenewold second and Hughes, the defending champion in the event, third.
Groenewold was also second in the 1,500 metres and took the all around title, a first in 30 years for a Dutchwoman.
