Born as Renate Meißner, she was a very talented athlete, also competing in the high jump and pentathlon.

Renate Stecher completely dominated women's sprinting in the early 1970s, establishing a winning streak of 90 successive outdoor wins at 100m and 200m.
She first came to international prominence at the 1969 European Championships at Athens, where she was second in the 200m, and was a member of East Germany's gold medal winning 4 x 100m relay team.
Stecher received the baton a metre behind Heide Rosendahl and it was expected that she would be able to make up this deficit.

Before the 1976 Summer Olympics, everybody's attention was not directed at Richter, but at fellow Dortmunder Ingeborg Helten, who had set a new World Record just prior to the Games.

Three days later she won a silver medal in the 200 m and another one in the 4 x 100 m relay, being beaten by East Germany this time.
