RenderMan is actually a technical specification for interfacing between modeling and rendering programs.
For a renderer to be a considered a RenderMan compliant renderer it must meet all of the standard requirements laid out in the spec.
RenderMan Interface Bytestream (RIB), very simply, is the file format used to pass scene information (model data, lights, camera, shaders, attributes, and options) to a RenderMan renderer to control image that it will render.

RenderMan is the name of a computer graphics rendering technology developed by Pixar Animation Studios; an implementation of Pixar's photorealistic 3D description standard, the RenderMan Interface Specification.
RenderMan per se is not a single piece of software.
Other people have implemented RenderMan compliant renderers and 3Delight is one of the better ones (and it's free, which doesn't hurt).

 8 RenderMan Interface
The RenderMan interface is one of the few interfaces for rendering programs which is able to describe both still images and animations for a wide variety of rendering algorithms.
One shortcoming of the RenderMan interface is the incompleteness of the specification and its strong bias towards the REYES rendering architecture [CCC87].
The RenderMan interface in its current state is certainly not the final word for a general interface to a rendering system, although we believe that it currently is the most flexible and comprehensive interface.

Renderman for Maya is designed to put the production-proven power of Renderman into the hands of the small to medium PC- and Mac-based CG houses.
No doubt renderman is a powerful rendering system (and more powerful than mental ray in production level tasks) but for a small group like us or a normal user, renderman is probably the worst choice.

 Java Bindings for the RenderMan API
Based on The RenderMan Interface Spec version 3.1; there are mostly only minor changes to the RenderMan class and support classes (parameter name changes, a few additional routines not documented in the Companion, fixes to errors in the Companion).
The RenderMan Interface was designed by Pixar to be an interface between modeling applications and renderers in order to allow each to evolve independent of the another (more information about RenderMan is available at The RenderMan Repository).
However, due to the ubiquity of C and C++, the C binding for the API has become dominant, and the original design of the API was tied closely to C. This binding, a port of the RenderMan API to the cross-platform Java programming language, is primarily a direct transcription of the C binding.

 Vector RenderMan
The intent of Vector RenderMan is that it be used as a previewer for PhotoRealistic RenderMan.
Though it is possible to use vectrman directly, we strongly recommend using the command script render with the -vector flag, which handles all of the niceties of streams and file concatenation required by your operating system before it invokes vectrman.
Vector RenderMan is not capable of generating a zfile which is used to generate a shadow map.

I've got a lot of experience in Renderman during all those years, writing the tools, consulting companies and studios and implementing my own projects and experiments.

RenderMan is an Interface between packages which produce geometry, and renderers which turn that geometry into images.
The RenderMan standard is also very big on "shading", adding surface detail to an object seperate to the geometry.
RenderMan renderer projects seem to be popular to start, and then the once keen developer discovers its a rather harder slog than they figured.

The RenderMan Interface is currently specified in two forms: the C language binding, which was first published in Version 3.0 of the specification, and the RenderMan Interface Bytestream (RIB) protocol, which appears in Version 3.1.
The most compact form of the RenderMan Interface Bytestream is a binary encoded version of the human-readable ASCII form, which in turn translates directly to the C language binding.
Secondly, this map is used by PhotoRealistic RenderMan to determine, during the rendering of a frame, whether a piece of geometry is the closest thing to the light and therefore illuminated, or if something else is closer and thus it is in shadow.

 RenderMan
Currently under development, SLander is runtime system for renderman shaders allowing them to be previewed more rapidly than BMRT or PRman.
RenderMan allows procedural pritives, where an external program can be called mid-render to generate additional geometry for a scene as it's needed.
HaRM demonstrates how this can be used to invoke Houdini on the fly, and extract objects from hip files as required by the scene, rather than generating rib code for all primitives a-priori.

 cgkit tutorial: Rendering with RenderMan
For this tutorial, this has to be a RenderMan compliant renderer such as, for example, PRMan, Air, RenderDotC or one of the freely available renderers such as Aqsis, Pixie or 3Delight.
Additionally, there has to be a C preprocessor (cpp) on your system if you are using the RMMaterial class which is done later in the tutorial (the preprocessor is used to prepare a shader source file for parsing).
When you create images with cgkit and RenderMan you'll typically use some kind of modeling tool to create your assets and then use Python and the cgkit to manipulate some aspects of your scene or just use the render tool to invoke the renderer.

PRMan is sold by Pixar as the "RenderMan Toolkit" and is available for SGI, Sun, DEC Alpha OSF-1, Linux/Intel, Linux/Alpha, and Windows NT/Intel, all at US$5000 per CPU.
