The Peculiarities of Rendzina Genesis.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Rendzinas with residual soil thicker than 10-16 ft (3-5 m) represented by eluvium of limestone rocks are hardly ever met.
Thus it should be assumed that humus-accumulating layer of rendzinas is formed out: a) in herbaceous cenoses, b) in forest cenoses with herbaceous cover, c) in forest cenoses with no sod (although participation of sod in the initial humus formation is impossible to deny).
Rendzinas are perhaps the only intrazonal type of soil formation which in its evolution may be included into the zonal soil formation, the soils of rendzic origin always featuring the traits of rendzinas.

Estonica : Nature : The Quaternary cover and soil cover
About ten types of soil are distinguished in Estonia, differing from one another in their distribution, structure, properties and the ways they are used.
Limestone rendzinas (Rendzic Leptosols) on alvars occur in North and West Estonia, where limestone bedrock lies close to the land surface.
Ryhk and pebble rendzinas (Rendzic Leptosols and Calcaric Regosols) on calcareous sceletal till can also be found mainly in North and West Estonia, although in areas of thicker quaternary cover.

  01.0 - ABS Feature Articles, 2001
On only about ten per cent of the continent is natural rainfall sufficient, or excessive, for plant growth for nine to twelve months of the year, and some of this falls or drains on to soils too steep and stony, or too elevated and cold.
The terra rossas are variable in texture, but the rendzinas are generally well structured clay soils, some having seasonally rising and falling groundwater.
The only extensive occurrence of rendzinas is in the south-east of South Australia, where they occupy the wet calcareous floors of long swales between ridges of ancient stranded coastal dunes.

Wheat, maize, barley, oats, pastures, red clover, white clover and vegetables are all known to be responsive to copper in France especially when growing on podzols on Les Landes de Gascogne, on rendzinas in areas underlain by chalk, and on luvisols on clay with flints, and on peats.
The podzols, brown forest soils (cambisols) and rendzinas are reported to be liable to copper deficiency, whereas the chernozems are not.
Copper deficiency occurs on peat soils, on brown forest soils, rendzinas and podzolised soils.

The soils are mostly dominated by Rendzinas; in some locations, on loess, Calcaro-Chromic Cambisols have developed.
The Rendzinas are in varying degrees of developement.

Rendzinas and Rankers: both these soil groups are shallow by definition.
Soil groups and units such as Vitric Andosols, Rendzinas and Lithosols generally contain a significant amount of gravel, while in other soils such as Ferralsols (stone line), Regosols, Acrisols, and soils with a petrocalcic or petrogypsic phase gravel occurrence is more common but largely dependent on local conditions.
In the present general approach it is suggested to reduce Smax by 50% when a stony or petric phase is present in a mapping unit of the DSMW.

Rendzinas   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Soils whose nature and properties are directly related to rock type are described as lithomorphic soils, a term derived from the Greek lithos, meaning rock.
On pure limestones and chalks these soils are rendzinas.
Rendzinas occur on the outcrops of Carboniferous Limestone around Castletown and have neutral to alkaline pH values (7 or above).

On the rocks and stony slopes shallow protorendzinas and moder rendzinas prevail, while the deeper detritus on milder slopes is covered with more mature mull rendzinas, and in the areas where moisture can collect, with brown rendzinas.
Only on small areas, where the soil development could proceed for a long time, without being disturbed either by erosion or by new sedimentation, it is possible to find also fully decalcified weathered soils of the terra fusca type.
The soil conditions are heavily complicated by the presence of mixed deluvia and minor slides, e.g.

These are fragile environments and should not be damaged by unnecessary erosion of the soil, but there are usually plenty of existing erosion scars where the soil characteristics are already visible.
Rendzina soils are defined as shallow (less than 30cm deep) calcareous soils with only a topsoil.
They are subdivided into brown rendzinas (left illustration) and humic (with high organic content) rendzinas (right illustration).

The method ensures that the plant gets a supply of copper at the time of spraying, which may not always be the case with soil applications if the metal is sorbed in an unavailable form.
Consequently, foliar copper is usually a more reliable treatment for deficiencies on peats, organic rendzinas and other soils where unavailability, rather than low total content, is the problem.
In some cases, a combination of a single soil treatment followed by annual foliar application is the most effective in combating severe deficiency.

An Assessment of Farming Prescriptions Under the Rural Environment Protection Scheme in the Uplands of the Burren ...
All farms are dominated by Rendzinas of the Burren Series which characterise the areas falling under the "NHA Conditions for the Conservation of the High Burren" under REPS (Heritage Service 1996).
The general picture that presented itself, particularly in the central and eastern Burren, both on some of the REPS farms and in reference areas visited, was that management and resources were concentrated on the better grassland areas, i.e.
the deeper Rendzinas of the Kilcolgan Series and the Brown Earths of the Kinvarra Series (see Section 4.1.) - many of which were reclaimed in the past 10-20 years - while the limestone grassland/heathland sites became increasingly covered in scrub and in some instances lost all their grazing value and were abandoned.

The active and comparatively soft Cretaceous limestone favours the formation of chernozem rendzinas with characteristic plasma fabrics; crystic and masepic.
The accumulation horizons of the examined rendzinas contain organic matter in the form of mullicol, humicol and argilla-humicol; only some few weakly decomposed fragments are in the form of humiskel.
Chernozem rendzinas developed from Cretaceous limestone are of a stronger lithogenic character than brown rendzinas, developed from Triassic and Jurassic limestone.

The correlation with Xerochrepts does not seem adequate; in this case a new Calcic subgroup apparently should be defined.
