Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759-1840): an exhibit in the rare book room of The Holden Arboretum, Kirtland, Ohio   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Fortunately, Pierre Joseph and his younger brother, Henri Joseph, obtained new employment at this time painting the botanical vellums for the Muséum - thanks to the influence of Gerard von Spaendonck, the professor of flower painting at the Muséum, who was Pierre's teacher; and René Louiche Desfontaines, who was professor of botany there.
Desfontaines, having been aware of Redouté's succulent paintings, undertook to put him in contact with the young Swiss botanist, Augustin Pyramus de Candolle, who was then a student at the Jardin.
This resulted in their collaboration to produce the Plantarum historia succulentorum or Histoire des plantes Grasses published from 1799 to 1805.
