Topic: Renegade (HammerFall album)

In the News (Thu 24 Dec 09)

  Review | Renegade by HammerFall
Renegade, their crucial third album, could gain the band a melodic rock/AOR audience.
Granted, Cans shows increasing sophistication as a singer on this album, and you can't discount the beauty of his multi-tracked phrasing atop the percussive pre-choruses of epics like "Living In Victory" and "Destined For Glory." It may be difficult for him to replicate this sound in concert unless he uses a vocal harmonizer.
HammerFall beat out Britney Spears for the top spot in Swedish TV's video countdown in September, yet they surely don't want to be accused of "going pop." They haven't, but Renegade is not "leagues heavier than its predecessors," as the press release claims.

I think this album definitely is what Hammerfall is all about, so if you don’t like this Hammerfall album, to quote [guitarist] Oscar [Dronjak] now, “you don’t like Hammerfall.” So if you don’t like this album, there’s no need to buy anything else.
This album might be a little bit darker, like “Titan,” for instance, is kind of a very dark, futuristic vision when we all have to leave planet Earth to find something, like a new habitat.
Hammerfall live is a way for the fans to be part of the show.

RevelationZ Magazine - Album Review - Hammerfall - Renegade
I clearly remember the impact Hammerfall's first album Glory To The Brave had on me, I was hooked immediately by this overwhelming, untamed and refreshing Power Metal that left a strong urge to press the play button once again, it was thrilling to say the least.
Their second album Legacy Of Kings lived up to the high expectations in impressive style, and it is with this background that I feel a bit down writing this review.
Renegade is the Swedes' third album and quite a lot of the magic has defiantly disappeared, it's like some of the unbound aggressiveness and high level of catchiness has been replaced with more basic song writing that come out tame in comparison.

Hammerfall remind me of an old parable I was once introduced to, about the man (there were only men around in those days) building his house on the sand, and the man that built his abode on the rock.
Hammerfall’s live renditions are mirrors of studio efforts, added to by Joacim relaying to the audience his Manowhorish power metal motifs in Swedish — berefting us English speakers of a good giggle.
Hammerfall perform brilliantly, I have no qualm with their live abilities, but I’d prefer to invest my money into something new and slightly interesting, quite content with my complete and beautifully produced Hammerfall back catalogue.

Hammerfall is easy to make fun of, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t roll my eyes and grin during parts of this album.
While this album doesn’t quite live up to the quality of their last effort, Legacy of Kings, this album is definitely a must have for fans of the genre, and it’s a damn fun listen for us who just dabble in this sort of thing as well.
The music on the album is top-notch, with strong structures and excellent performances turned in by all the musicians involved.

This album ranges from good to outstanding, with the only uninspired track (surprisingly) being a ballad entitled "Always Will Be." Hammerfall usually nails their ballads, so I was actually stunned that this track is easily the least effective song here.
After their stellar debut album, "Glory to the Brave," shocked the entire Metal community into believing in Power Metal again, their second album, "Legacy of Kings," cemented their standing with a solid follow-up excursion but showed them to be in a holding pattern nonetheless.
Hammerfall get's a lot of crap for being cheesy(real cheesy),but who cares, there music is good. They are traditional metal(maybe they have a little, little power metal in them).

As the second wave of power metal stretched on for a period that seemed longer than the genre's original period of glory years, preeminent practitioners like Sweden's Hammerfall recognized that their sound needed sprucing up.
Fortunately, on the 2000 Nuclear Blast release Renegade, Hammerfall took a collective glimpse into the future, turning away ever so slightly from their '80s metal influences.
Precision is at a premium, and while the lyrics are still way over the top, there's a universal appeal to hard-charging numbers like "Keep the Flame Burning" and "Living in Victory" that speak to a marginally wider audience, not just obsessive power metal enthusiasts.
