In 1983 the seat of Renfrewshire West was substantially reduced when 16,000 voters in the Johnson-Linwood area were transferred to the new Paisley South and a similar number from Renfrew moved to Paisley North.
In 1964, John Maclay retired and Renfrewshire West was won for Labour by Mr Norman Buchan with a majority of 1,011 over the Tories.
Renfrewshire West had grown considerably and by 1979 the electorate had grown to 79,339.

Renfrewshire is situated on the Firth of Clyde, just to the west of Glasgow.
In 1270 William Wallace, perhaps Scotland's greatest patriot, was born in the Renfrewshire village of Elderslie, and it can fairly be said that it was his initial resistance to the English King Edward I that grew into the Scottish Wars of Independence.
In the 19th century Renfrewshire was overtaken by the industrial revolution.

 Waste Aware Renfrewshire: Kerbside Recycling
The Waste Aware Renfrewshire Recycling Campaign began in March 2005, introducing residents of Renfrewshire to new recycling schemes: a multimaterial household waste kerbside collection in addition to an extended garden waste collection, a paper collection for tenements and mini recycling centres for flats.
Currently 42,700 households in Renfrewshire have been provided with a blue box and a green box for recycling multimaterial household waste, and a brown bin for recycling garden waste as detailed below:
In October 2005, a Waste Aware survey was conducted during which doorstep surveyors consulted 449 residents from across Renfrewshire.
