The county is required by New York state law to have a facility that has sufficient cells to hold all of the inmates remanded to the jail.
With the state Commission of Correction poised to consider the renewal of the variance granted to the county to double-cell inmates, the commission is requiring the county to produce a plan of how the county will permanently address the overcrowding at the county jail.
