Aphex Twin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
James formed the Rephlex Records label in 1991 with his friend Grant Wilson-Claridge and released his first records on this label, as well as Mighty Force and RandS Records of Belgium.
After success with his early work, James relocated to London and released a slew of albums and EPs on the Warp Records label, under a bewildering set of aliases (from AFX and Polygon Window to the lesser known Gak and Power Pill).
For these records, James used his extensive collection of Roland drum machines which he bought when they were still at bargain prices.

Aphex Twin, co-founded Rephlex Records in 1991 to release a few bizarre records for his DJ friends to include in their sets.
Rephlex has become a byword for the brand of computer-created music that James and a few of his label-mates have become famous for, with some of the biggest names ending up on Warp records.
A boutique label that caters to a very specific audience, Rephlex is the small art gallery that attracts lovers of the dystopic urbanity that can produce a music so far removed from the sounds of everyday life, or anything natural for that matter.

Rephlex Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rephlex Records is an influential record label started in 1991 by acclaimed electronic musician Richard D. James (aka Aphex Twin) and Grant Wilson-Claridge, without the intention of making large profits.
It pioneered "Innovation in the dynamics of Acid", or Braindance as Rephlex prefers to call it.

Finally the highly sought after four separate and rare Rephlex 12” releases are made available on CD in a one-hour mix by Kosmik Kommando called Innovation in The Dynamics of Acid.
Rephlex’s roster as a whole is dominated by Braindance beats and wacky production techniques, and on occasion deviates from that ‘norm’ to embrace other interesting formulas that fit the label’s interests at the time.
Rephlex has etched their niche, acting as an umbrella label for producers to push their limits, minds, and technical savvy further to the outer most reaches of the unknown.

The album Prebuild draws together a clutch of recordings from the 1986-88 period as 808 State began experimenting with the new sounds which they heard coming out of Chicago and Detroit.
Included is a live to air radio broadcast, a raw 14 minute acid work out recorded at the group’s first ever live gig at the Boardwalk Club and recordings made by A Guy Called Gerald in his mum’s attic.

This has yielded an alarmingly consistent string of albums-that-time-forgot that sound like the Monkees trying to be Kraftwerk: obliviously, and-your-point-would-be-edly reactionary, blissfully free of all that herky-jerky future-retro irony that fuels smirky neo-electroids like Add N To (X).
But as wildly varying as Rephlex releases are, they all share the naïve eccentricity of their label founder, so uncannily that if all these folks were really just elaborate aliases for James's own schizophrenic output, nobody would be shocked.
James and Claridge themselves prefer to call their post-dance aesthetic "braindance." But as a recent spate of dance records exhibiting Rephlex-ian eccentricities shows, this post-dance "amazing"-ness is converging with dance music's need to find the funk in new ways.

Born in 1991 as the bastard child of Grant Wilson-Claridge and Richard D James aka Aphex Twin, Rephlex Records have been releasing electronic music of the highest standard for 12 years and it's still going strong.
As Marcus Scott, who runs the promotional wing of the Rephlex, explains the label was "set up mainly to release Richard D James' 'dancefloor trax' but like all good labels the momentum and choice of releases grew, and we outgrew our exclusively dancey roots."
Boasting the debut releases of Squarepusher and Mu-Ziq, Rephlex have always had an impressive artist roster under their belt, with the likes of Cylob, DMX Crew and Ovuca, as well as classics from Stakker, Baby Ford and 808 State, gracing their discography.
