Replay Gain DSP plugin for Winamp2
This plugin allows you to apply Replay Gain to any sound source for which you have an input plugin for Winamp - no special support from the format or the input plugin is needed.
Although such support would be preferable as Replay Gain data should be stored in the audio file itself, I don't expect formats such as.wav,.xm or.mod to ever get such support.
This makes calculating Replay Gain values much less annoying than with my Winamp2 plugin because the file for which a Replay Gain value is to be calculated does not need to be played.

Replay Gain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Replay Gain is a proposed standard published in 2001 to normalize the perceived loudness of computer audio formats such as MP3 and Ogg Vorbis.
Replay Gain works by first performing a psychoacoustic analysis scan of the entire audio file to measure the perceived loudness and peak levels.
Typically, the gain value and the peak value are then stored in the audio file as metadata, allowing Replay Gain–compliant audio players to automatically attenuate (or in some cases amplify) the output so that such files will play back at similar loudness to one another.

 Replay Gain - Hydrogenaudio Knowledgebase
Replay Gain is the name of a technique invented to achieve the same playback volume of audio files.
Notes: Replay Gain values are stored in the header and Replay Gain is part of the Musepack specifications; therefore any Musepack decoder that does not support Replay Gain can be considered broken.
Replay Gain being present in the specs of FLAC, Musepack, and APE formats, any player that support those formats usually support Replay Gain.

Replay Gain: play music files without volume fluctuations
Replay Gain is one suggested way of smoothing out volume fluctuations when you play your digital music files, without affecting the audio information stored in the files.
Simply put, a Replay Gain tool analyses the audio in a digital music file and then decides how much louder or quieter that music file ought to be to achieve a standard volume.
I use Foobar 2000 to add Replay Gain data to my music files which are in MP3 and FLAC formats.

 [mad-dev] Replay Gain
The Replay Gain proposed standard was set forth in 2001 by David Robinson and can be viewed here: http://www.replaygain.org/ First it's important to understand that Replay Gain has absolutely no bearing on the libmad proper; it doesn't affect the actual decoding process whatsoever, and libmad has no knowledge of Replay Gain structures or semantics.
When Replay Gain is enabled, players are encouraged to supply a default pre-amp gain of at least +6 dB in addition to the Replay Gain adjustment.
That means the Replay Gain adjustment computed by LAME is now 6 dB greater than what is specified by the proposed standard, and players that implement the recommended pre-amp gain on top of that will amplify the signal too much -- and often cause clipping.

Replay Gain - A proposed standard
There is a remarkably simple solution to this annoyance, and that is to store the required replay gain for each track within the track.
The later ID3v2 standard also incorporates the ability to store a track relative volume adjustment, which can be used to "fix" quiet or loud sounding mp3s.
However, there is no consistent standard by which to define the appropriate replay gain which mp3 encoders and players agree on, and no automatic way to set the volume adjustment for each track — until now.

A pre-amp gain is also used in conjunction with Replay Gain to achieve the overall desired loudness.
Replay Gain is also incompatible with the -A (--adjust-volume) option; any attempt to use it will be ignored.

 Highly Experimental v2.09
Use replay gain data to adjust the volume of the song, instead of manual volume adjustment.
Use peak data included in the song tag (typically from a replay gain scanner) to prevent the volume from being turned to a level which would cause clipping.
If replay gain is enabled, and if it's present in the file, you'll see the replay gain instead of the relative volume, and it will not be editable.
