Replicator (Star Trek) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A drawback to this process is that it is impossible to replicate objects with complicated quantum structures such as living beings (although in the TNG episode Allegiance the aliens said their replicators could replicate living matter and replicated a Picard impostor), dilithium, or latinum.
On Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the creators of the show finally established that replication is also used for renewing breathable air on ships and starbases (supposedly also disassembling the carbon dioxide exhaled by the crew), thus eliminating the necessity of air tanks and providing an endless supply of oxygen.
Replication is also a key part of the Holodeck program, so that food, clothes and other objects belonging to a simulation can actually be used or consumed by the participants.

 Replicator - Memory Alpha
A replicator (or food slot) is a device that uses transporter technology to dematerialize quantities of matter and then rematerialize that matter in another form.
This is due to the replicator manufacturing food and beverages at the molecular level rather than at the quantum level as used by most transporter systems.
Replicators are also one of the technologies used in holodecks and holosuites.

 Lessons from Star Trek
The world of Star Trek is the best possible example of Socialist Dystopia ever thought of (with the USSR a close second), it is a world the Steve Pavlina I’ve been reading for the past weeks would hardly tolerate living and as for Ayn Rand….well she most certainly would have taken arms againt it.
Star Trek success is to address the issues of the world - be they religious, political or historical unless these elements are not factored in the stories of Star Trek then like the recent Star Trek Enterprise’s failure others are bound to fail.
Star Trek is not simply a star ship travelling from one planet to another it is about issues the ship when it visits a world encounters a specific moment in human history or something which is occurring in modern times.

 Star Trek: Special Technology
Replicators are a low-resolution version of transporters, which transport raw materials from storage through "waveguides" (ref. TM) to "replication terminals" where the raw material is reorganized at the molecular level into a new form based on stored data.
Replicated matter: replicators manufacture physical objects inside the holodeck, which can be carried around, touched, thrown, or even carried outside the holodeck (as seen when children aboard the Enterprise-D threw snow into the hallway outside the holodeck).
The replicator was a kludge of Cardassian and Starfleet types and included a raw-matter supply container able to contribute enough mass to build one sixty-fifth of a complete mine.
