icCroydon - The family car that doubles as a repmobile
There was a good reason of course - Peugeot's PR team was recognising the environment that the majority of examples of its new baby will spend their time.
For while the Peugeot 407 may officially be described as a family car, basically it's a repmobile.
Like its rivals the Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Vectra and VW Passat, and the newer challenger the Mazda6, the 407's natural environment will be tooling up and down motorways with boots full of product samples, and resting in Little Chef car parks while drivers fill themselves sup on Olympic Breakfasts.

The intake on the Evo, in contrast, is modestly flush with the bonnet.
Apart from the headlamp clusters there is little about the essential profile of the Evo that sets it apart from any old mid-range repmobile of the last 20 years or so.
If the basic 2.0 litre turbocharged 276 bhp model doesn't stand your hair on end, you can spend £2,000 more for the 300 bhp FQ-300 package, which is so rally-ready it practically comes with its own patch of Welsh forest.

Ford Mondeo 2.2 TDCi: It's surely a sign of a car's popularity when it lends its name to the caricature of a social grouping, even if it is less than complimentary.
That's about street cred and status, and even with the barn-storming ST220 version of the Mondeo, we all knew it would only a appeal to the avid car fans.
As far as the nosy neighbourhood watch status police are concerned, it's still a repmobile and if Jimmy drives a spoiler-clad Mondeo while Tommy next door has the Audi A4, then Tommy's the high-flyer.

After a week in an Accord, it is my impression that the Son of God might find the Honda a little too full of itself for his own purposes.
If one of these were to drive straight at you on a pedestrian crossing - which, being a repmobile, it would be quite likely to - you'd need a very quick eye indeed to distinguish whether it was a Honda or a VW.
At the back, though, the thick-ended boot is chopped off almost vertically, creating a tougher look, not to mention a positively cavernous storage space.

The Ford Sierra appeared in 1982 as a replacement for the then de-facto repmobile, the Ford Cortina.
Daring in its styling, with looks you either loved or hated, the Sierra quickly acquired the Cortina's crown as the number one repmobile.
Ford naturally took the basic car and produced a hot version that was badged the XR4i powering it with a 2.8 litre V6 engine.

The CSL is hardly a repmobile tho, even if the car it's based on is. If it's a repmobile, then the Evo 8 is a bland Japanese box and the Integrale is a flaky Italian shopping trolley.
In the same way they're effectively rally cars for the road, the CSL is a saloon racer for the road.

Once plagued by the 'repmobile' image, it's now highly respected and very refined.
Showered with awards, the only sour note is that Mondeos still lose money fast.

According to Renault, Ford's new repmobile could have "the shortest honeymoon in history" when buyers get an eyeful of the all-new Laguna II next February.
Many industry observers expected the Mondeo to win the 2001 Car of the Year award this week, and although it just failed to do so - the title was snatched by Alfa's stylish 147 hatchback - Renault's claim remains a bold one, for Ford's revised repmobile has indeed been well received.
There have been some quibbles about its styling and finish, but road testers have heaped praise on its dynamic qualities and spacious interior.

Why I No Longer Like Driving
Boy Racers and the Repmobile: These people behave similarly to the White Van Man in that they have a tendency to drive about six inches from the rear of your car, cut you up and don't signal.
There are differences however, unlike White Van Man, these people have no sense of self preservation and do things like overtake on blind corners, pull out in front of you as you're doing about 70mph and make rude gestures at you when you get irate with them.
The Repmobile is usually part of the company fleet and usually a high spec Vectra or Mondeo, thus they are quick in a straight line but don't corner too well and are instantly recognisably by the suit jacket hanging in the rear window.

But according to price experts at CAP Monitor, there may be light at the end of the tunnel for the traditional secondhand 'repmobile'.
CAP say today's generation of higher specification, higher safety, large and comfortable D sector repmobiles remain attractive to many people and a better balance of supply and demand would give this sector a significant boost.
