So I wrote another screenplay: REPO MAN. This was based on my own experience of the punk scene, and working for Mark Lewis, a Los Angeles car repossessor and my neighbour in Venice, CA.
REPO MAN was made as a "negative pickup" by Universal at the time when Bob Rehme was head of the studio.
REPO MAN was a work of considerable freedom and creativity.

Repo Man is a satire on society that resists the urge to become nihilistic.

I suppose if it stuck to either the repo man side of the tale or just concentrated on the aliens, it could have been much more ordinary, but the combination of the two makes it almost inevitably quirky and unusual.
Repo Man features a few supplemental materials, the most significant of which is an audio commentary from director/writer Alex Cox, executive producer Michael Nesmith, casting director Victoria Thomas, and actors Sy Richardson, Zander Schloss, and Del Zamora; all of them were recorded together in one session.
The Repo Man commentary delves into a fair amount of nostalgic comments, and the participants also spend a lot of time simply enjoying the movie; many probably have not seen it in years and they clearly had a good time as they watched it.

VIDEO: "Repo Man" is presented in a THX-Approved anamorphic transfer in the film's original 1.85:1 aspect ratio.
"Repo Man" fans will be pleased with Anchor Bay's efforts here; although it doesn't look perfect, the film still looks excellent considering age and budget.

Now available on DVD, "Repo Man" lives on as a testament to a time that allowed directors like Cox to experiment with and tweak convention.

"Repo Man" is one of those movies that slips through the cracks and gives us all a little weirdo fun.
Repo men, we learn, live their lives on the edge, operating under extreme tension that is caused partly by their working conditions and partly because as Stanton explains, "I've never known a repo man who didn't use a lot of speed." Harry Dean Stanton is one of the treasures of American movies.
I saw "Repo Man" near the end of a busy stretch on the movie beat: Three days during which I saw more relentlessly bad movies than during any comparable period in memory.

'Repo Man' offers an 80s-take on dystopia, a post-Reagonomic consumer-hell where dope-smoking baby-boomer parents are hypnotised by the TV, where nihilistic punks steal & where a strange man drives around with a neutron-bomb in the boot of his car, that the FBI are after as part of a wider UFO-conspiracy!
He is completely believable as the obtrusive and uncaring repo man and he tackles the role with the neccessary lack of enthusiasm.
