The Representative Party of Alberta was a provincial political party in Alberta, Canada formed by Raymond Speaker in 1984.
Prior to the 1982 Alberta election, Raymond Speaker and Walt Buck left the Alberta Social Credit Party and ran as Independents, despite being elected successfully to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta they were denied Official Opposition status by the Speaker of Legislature and funding reserved for political parties.
In 1985 the Social Credit Party along with the Western Canada Concept and Heritage Party of Alberta began a merger movement that resulted in the Alberta Alliance Political Association.

Point being, Alberta is in an economic boom, which probably makes it easier for regular folk to turn a blind eye to the crumbling social system and leeeeaaaan ever more rightward.
If a candidate is told "we don't want you to represent our community", but gets appointed to government anyway because his party had a certain percentage of the vote - that doesn't strike me as a better plan at all.
As for fear of dangerously radical parties winning seats under PR, the solution is to set a reasonable lower limit of the popular vote that parties would have to reach before gaining seats.
