Reptantia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In older classifications, Reptantia is a sub-order alongside Natantia, with Reptantia containing the walking forms, and Natantia the swimming forms (prawns, shrimp and boxer shrimp).
The name Reptantia means "those that walk", and contains those decapods whose primary mode of locomotion is to walk along a surface using the pereiopods rather than swimming through the water with the pleopods.
Reptantia is also used for a group of nemertean worms.

However, for the sake of simplicity, they are here described under the old sub-orders of Reptantia for "crawlers" (crabs and lobsters) and Natantia for "swimmers" (prawns and shrimps).
Beginning with Reptantia, the East coast rock lobster has a relative to the south and another to the west.
Still with Reptantia, true crabs are fairly similar to rock lobsters but lack a tail-fan and their abdomen is smaller.

 Decapoda
Classification within the order Decapoda is currently under debate.
Most older authorities divide them into two suborders, Natantia, the swimming decapods (basically, shrimps), and Reptantia, the walking decapods (crabs etc).
A more recent scheme, however, makes use of the structure of the gills and legs, and the way in which the larvae develop.

 Decapoda
While Bate's three divisions are no longer accepted, the terms refer to the three main gill types seen in decapods, trichobranchiate, dendrobranchiate and phyllobranchiate.
In 1907, Borradaile divided the Decapoda into two suborders, the Natantia and Reptantia.
The Natantia (meaning "swimmers") are all those forms that swam in the water column and include the tribes Penaeides, Carides and Stenopides.

The Lure of the Reefs: AAES Researchers Explore Food Chain Theory
The stomach contents of the red snapper were evaluated for each item of prey, with percent volume, percent number, and percent occurrence estimated and then used to calculate the Index of Relative Importance (IRI).
Researchers found that, in the open habitat, red snapper under 2 inches SL fed primarily on minute marine crustaceans known as copepods, planktonic wormlike marine organisms called chaetognaths, crabs (Reptantia), and shrimps (Natantia), while those red snapper that ranged from 2 to 3 inches SL fed primarily on shrimps.
The diets of red snapper larger than 3 inches SL were dominated by teleosts, or bony fishes.

In the whole area, a total of 16 species of decapods (6 Natantia, Caridea; 4 Reptantia Macrura, Thalassinidea; 2 Anomura; and 4 Brachyura) were collected by a Van Veen grab.
The decapod distribution seems to be influenced by granulometric composition rather than by depth.
