	Republic (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Republic was New Order's first album after the demise of Factory Records, and their last for eight years.
		The album follows on the standard New Order principles of not having anything other than the credits and art inside the CD sleeve, and of having a Peter Saville designed cover.
		A limited-edition version of the Republic album was also released in the United States.

		What separates it from their label mates is that BSS albums are only about 85% lyrical, and mostly musical experiments which, to a degree, work.

		After the powerhouse of Highway 61 Revisited, all I could notice about this album, at first, was the lack of a unifying theme, the unevenness of the sound (across songs), and the palpable weariness of Dylan's voice (expressed perfectly in the picture on the back cover of the album).
		Given the amount of material (rock's first double album) and the subject matter (love, longing, loss, etc.), it began to feel right that the album was a little messy from a thematic and sonic perspective.
		But back to my segue from "It's Alright, Ma." This album is focused almost entirely on being forced to deal with being alone in the world, with "no direction home" as it were.

		By this time they were an act geared to mainstream appetites, and the lighter tone and preponderance of upbeat synthesizer hooks on REPUBLIC suggested a group who had identified their strengths and weaknesses in the four-year interval since their last album.
		I for one don't like Regret, the albums most popular track, it's got an irritating jangley tambourine sound and some of their worst lyrics, which is a shame since overall the lyrics are some of Sumner’s best.
		All in all Republic is New Order in commercial territory, by no means sell out, but their least fascinating album, but any band that has balanced pop and dance so well on previous albums is worthy of praise, even if it's not such a memorable experience this time round.

		The difference between the aforementioned bands and the Most Serene Republic is one of degree: this band pushes the cutesy vocals and frenzied compositions until the ideas sound exhausted.
		It’s hard to know if the sentiments get any deeper than this, as they’re sung in a high register and are often buried in the mix, but snippets here and there seem to be along the same lines.
