The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a large multi-faceted organization (fraternal lodge, charitable society, special interest lobby, patriotic group, and political club) founded in 1866 by Union Army Surgeon Benjamin Franklin Stephenson.
In particular, these records are concerned with the disbandment of posts from the 1920's to 1940's.
Post Record Books (Boxes 78-81) were compiled by various posts and include minutes from meetings; ledgers, and registers of death and burial places of members; and other organizational matters.

The records of the Aurum Mining Company are part of the records of Day Mines, Inc., donated to the University of Idaho by Henry Day in 1984 and 1985.
The records of the Aurum Mining Company span the years 1916 to 1953, with the bulk of the material covering the years 1927 to 1947.
Of particular note in these records is the relative absence of stock and personnel records and, in contrast, the great amount of correspondence and related records.

Most families whose ancestors were in Texas during the Republic years (1835-1845) or earlier have stories of family members being in the great battles of the Revolution or serving in ranger companies along the borders.
It's not too hard to find Republic records of men with your surname, but it is much more difficult to show you are a direct descendant.
Records of subsequent owners of the land are held in county archives, some of which have suffered loss by fire and flood over the years.

 Texas Comptroller's Office: An Introduction to Comptroller's Office Records at the Texas State Archives, 1835-2001, ...
Correspondence records document the major as well as the minor functions of the office of the Comptroller in the later 19th century and the early 20th century, including the receipt of revenues and the expenditure and disbursement of funds.
Audited Republic claims (including both civil and military claims) are those that were submitted to the Comptroller or Treasurer of the Republic, and were audited and approved (or allowed) and paid by that government during the Republic period; thus both the services and the payments for these services date between 1835 and 1846.
Republic pension records document the pensions authorized by the Texas State Legislature for persons who rendered military service to the Republic of Texas (and their widows) and signers of the Declaration of Independence, to be administered by the Office of the Comptroller; they consist of 15 indexes plus the actual Republic pension files, dating 1870-1920.

Records that contain names and information on individual voters were never recorded during the period that Texas was under Spanish or Mexican rule.
Oddly, the most important voter records for the period of the Texas Republic are found in voter registrations taken after the Civil War.
From this information, it can be determined that the voter lived in the Republic of Texas if the records showed that he had lived in Texas for at least twenty-two years (or 23 or 24 years, depending on the date of registration).

Whereas under the Republic the Adjutant General was subservient to the Secretary of War, under statehood the position was elevated to that of head of all military departments.
These records are arranged roughly alphabetically by the last name of the individual making the power of attorney, followed by multiple powers of attorney for whole companies, arranged by the last name of the company commander.
These records consist of annotated jacket covers and wrappers which at some time were removed from the documents to which they pertained, mostly quartermaster records and powers of attorney, but also muster rolls and pay rolls, and correspondence.

According to a one-page carbon copy typescript by C. Russell (in Box 1, Folder 16), the Grand Army of the Republic was organized in the State of Illinois in April of 1866.
Originally, Grand Army of the Republic members were men who had seen service on the Union side during the Civil War, 1861-1865.
From records obtainable it has been ascertained that Sedgwick Post No. 12, G.A.R., enjoyed prosperity for a number of years; at one time having listed on their rolls 180 members.

Should you know of the location of GAR records, please send an email to GAR Records and include: Name, Number and Location of the Post along with the complete Name and Address of the Repository where records of that Post reside.
When the last member of each Post died, the records were treated as personal property and most were thrown out or burned by disinterested executors.
Those records which did survive were often given to local, state and national archives, historical societies or colleges, or inherited through default by later veterans oranizations such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
