The assembly was elected in the summer of 1938, the French-Turkish treaty settling the status of the Sandjak was signed on 4 july 1938.
On 2 september 1938 the assembly proclaimed it the Republic of Hatay and the territory was ceded by France to Turkey (without the approval of the Syrian government, which never recognized the cession) on 23 june 1939.
As the WWII began just afterwards, the League of Nations didn't have time to give its opinion about this cession (which seems to have been mostly motivated by the French wishes that Turkey should remain neutral in the coming war).
