Nonetheless, the Pictorial Issue often is associated with the Republic of Hawaii (and the issue sometimes is called The Republic Issue), and four pictorial issue stamps were issued during the life of the Republic (July 4, 1894 to June 13, 1900).
However, the Republic of Hawaii continued to exist as a United States possession until territorial status was established on June 14, 1900.

I think if we're going to chastise the Republic for not being duly elected by a population that enjoyed universal suffrage, to be fair we'd have to put the same type of language on the pages for the kingdom.
Toward the end of the 1894 a plot formed to overthrow the republic and to restore the monarchy.

President Grover Cleveland sent a new U.S. minister to Hawaii to restore Queen Liliuokalani to the throne under the 1887 constitution, but Dole refused to step aside and instead proclaimed the independent Republic of Hawaii, which was organized into a U.S. territory in 1900.
The territorial legislature of Hawaii finally voted her an annual pension of four thousand dollars and permitted her to receive the income from a small sugar plantation.
